Q: conversion L to Z visa in HK? Possible or not?

I'm EU citizen, and would like to come to Shanghai on L visa, and if I find a job, convert it to Z. Is it still possible in Hong Kong, or do I have to go back to EU? I'm reading a lot of contradictory information on the internet... I don't want to know if it's LEGAL, I'm interested if it is POSSIBLE. Thank you!

Once upon a time, it used to be relatively easy - but not any more!

It is still possible but the invitation letter that is issued by the Chinese local government through the sponsoring employer must specifically state that HK is the consulate at which the Z visa will be issued. Therefore, you should make it clear to the employer that HK is where you intend to go for the Z visa and hope that the paperwork states as such. If the invitation letter states the consulate in your home country, that is more than likely where you will have to go.

Yes, it is legal and possible. However, it is FEB's (Foreign Expert Bureau) decision of granting HK Z pick-up. It differs from Province to Province, even from city to city.

As I know, Shanghai SAFEA (FEB) requires teacher is Native English speaker, and return home for Z is also most likely outcome.

It's safer to count, you'll be required to return home, and apply for Z in Chinese Embassy.

It is Possible with less chances if your "Confirmation Letter of Invitation" is refer to HK. In my "Confirmation Letter of Invitation" it was written like this - "The Embassy (Consulate General/ Consulate/Office) of the P.R.China in ...................... or the Commissioner's office of the Foreign Ministry of the P.R.China in .................. SAR:

So the first blank space is for Country and second blank is for HK. So one blank column will be remain blank always subject to your invitation letter referred to whom..

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
