I've been trying to book a flight for a family member who has a long first name and two middle names. When I tried to book, the lady todl me the name was too long and couldn't be printed on the ticket. However, the name has to be the same as on the passport. So what's a person with a long name to do? Has anyone encountered similar problems?
Another issue is accents on letters that don't exist in pinyin like 'ä' in german. Is it okay to just write it as 'a' or should you go by the official 'ae' version or will this just totally confuse the airline?

I've seen the last letter of my surname being cut of on plane tickets and accents or special characters normalized. The airlines are probably OK with this (please check up on if this is actually a fact prior to going to the airport), but you are communicating with a person who thinks she will lose her job if she makes a mistake. Try to call the airline directly and ask how to go about this, or chose a better airline (e.g. something American or European) and book directly on their web site.

Happens to me, too. The full name will get registered on the system for security and the airlines. Same with banks, BTW. And registering your child's name on a birth certificate (many hassles with that).
My wife books my tickets in China and I have an "Æ" in my name.
We always just writes it as "ae" and have never had any problems with it.
I just had trouble booking a hotel over the phone. I was saying 'm' and the lady thought I was saying 'n'. After about 5 minutes of confusion I hung up and used booking.com. Much easier.
I have a two consecutive last names that adds up to 17 letters plus a first name and a middle name. It's the Spanish way of writing last names like: Jose Luis Perez Acosta or Juan Pedro Marquez Lugo. So I have name that looks like this: **** **** ********* ********
I have the ticket issuing office lump all my first two names and then my last two names together without spaces so that every thing fits. I was almost denied getting on a plan in Shenzhen because my last name had one letter missing. So now my name on a plane ticket looks like this: ******** ***************** Problem solved.
Not yet problems, but a few long looks and faces filled with consternation.
There are many languages and names that have spaces in them (Leonardo da Vinci as possibly the most famous example), and they insist on putting that middle one as a middle name, or putting the 2 names together... What really irks me is when it seems people think I don't know how to fill out a friggin from... I know my own First Name, and Surname, thank you very much!! Just because you've never heard of it is no reason to presume I must be wrong!

I can just picture you trying to book a ticket:
Raf: Hi, my name is... <Real name> Guilin-Raf. ...
Airline lady: Okay, Guilin-slash-raf...
I used to teach people how to use the reservations system used by BA (and most airlines at that time also used it (BABS)), the ticket would only allow for names with 8 characters, however the computer system itself would take any number of letters. So as long as the ticket had the reservation number (usually something like KHFRTY) then all is fine as if there is any problem with the name on the ticket it is the reservation they check. However double barreled names were a problem as the '-' key was used to as a field parameter so could not appear in the name itself, (it was the 'name' field parameter). e.g. to enter my name it would appear on the reservation as -1rection/hxfmr
Now that was well over 10 years ago so things have almost certainly changed (BABS has long since been replaced) but I doubt it has got LESS flexible.
The name should have anything to do with booking a flight. They should just print what part of the name they can get on it..Never heard of someone having two middle names before.....you need to use your sales and bargaining skills....convince them and they will let you pass!
My real name goes off the ticket because it's too long. Booking on some sites is a nightmare with a long middle name. However, I haven't had a problem booking on ctrip -- only qunar and other sites. As long as the reserved name matches the passport number, it shouldn't be a problem... I hope.
Have you tried ctrip?
Try CTrip.com
Usually, only up to half of my middle name appears on the ticket, but I don't have problems because of that
