Q: Dirty AC at the office - how dangerous is it?

In my old office building, a lot of people sneeze, cough, etc. constantly, but as soon as they're outside, they're fine.

Typically, I've always been fine in the building, but I was recently sick, and being in there seemed to aggravate things considerably. I'm guessing it could be the AC blowing air inside. What kind of health risks, exactly, do the old Chinese ACs pose?

Have you heard of Legionnaires' disease.
It kills people every year in western countries too.
True the A/C spreads nastys but it can also make them.
like everything it needs maintance. which you may have to explane the meaning of to a Chinese employer.
if it is a window unit or a split system clean the filters
if its a ducted system you can clean the filters but there are other things you need to know about and where to find them to clean them.
Good luck

kchur:

Someone thumbed down that for some reason, but it is a serious thing that does happen to dirty ACs, and there are a heck of a lot of them in this country. I'd be careful.

I have not heard of one person in China responsible for AC  units to even think of cleaning filters and ducts on a temporary basis.  The prevalent idea is if it works, there is no need to do any work on them.

It is unfortunately, but that is the way of life here.  And not only dirty filters are a health hazard, but they also cause higher electrical consumption and eventually shorten the lifew of compressor unit and / or evaporator fan
