Q: Do any of you IT gurus know the meaning of this?

I have tried connecting my VPN today but it appears to be blocked. This is the first time that I have encountered such a problem after using the same VPN for several years. Furthermore, certain overseas sites that can usually be opened without a VPN are returning the following error message: DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. All domestic internet sites remain accessible and some international sites.

Does anyone know the meaning of this error message and any possible ways to rectify the problem?

It's Google Chrome failure, and Yahoo-gle is loaded with explanations and fixes.

It doesn't load on my puter any of the links, but stick 'dns_probe_finished_nxdomain' in Yahoo-gle search and open few links for explanation and fix.

I got one: http://www.solveinweb.com/dns_probe_finished_nxdomain/

Microsoft Windows

• Open Network and Sharing Center.
• Click “Change Adapter Settings”.
• Find Network Connection that is used to connect to internet (either “Local Area Connection” or “Wireless Connection”), right-click on it and click Properties.
• Now in new windows select “Internet Protocol 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click Properties button.
• In the new window click the checkbox for “Use the following DNS server addresses:”
• Type in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Click Ok and close the rest of the windows.

I can't comment, so here is new 'pints' post:

I don't have Windows on my Mac, and I'm not sure what that thingy you posted means. I'm not familiar with Windows, buTT.....I stick it into Yahoo-gle search, and got an answer. I have special box on Safari, where I save research terms I couldn't open in China. When in HK or EU, I clear and get answers from that box first.

When I first time used GOOG search in 2003 or 04 my Q was: 'When is sunny in SF?' , and I got some answers from search...Was desperate in that time. I run out of spare dry shoes....

I use 'search' on Internet for anything I don't know the answer.

There has been a lot (and I mean a LOT) of Internet tomfoolery in China this past week. After the certain meeting in a certain city has finished, you will see a return to somewhat normal Internet operations (save those that saw a spike in traffic during that certain meeting).

There will be yet another huge "improvement" to the GFW prior to the Spring Festival as well. Any secure connections (HTTPS) are a game target.

Now, repeat after me, "Baidu is all I need. China very care about me and Baidu very care about me. Baidu is all I need."

I had the same issue a while ago, tried a whole bunch of solutions that didn't work, and in the end I fixed it by connecting to my VPN, then disconnecting again, then reconnecting.

On the other hand, it might be that your VPN has been banned (China announced a crackdown on VPN's a while ago, they might really have gone through with it).

I'm haveing trouble the last few days..no VPN...I can't even ping websites like CNN or Salon and Chinese Web works no problem. It isn't all the time though, but sporadic. I never used a VPN, so I have to use the regular China-Net, but it has been really bad these last few days.

I've had similar VPN issues with my iOS devices. Generally, I try to start the VPN, then toggle Flight Mode On/Off and my VPNs will work.
