Q: Do Chinese have other 'ways' of guessing if a baby is going to be a boy or girl?
Since you're not allowed to know a baby's sex in China while a woman is pregnant (for fear they'll abort if it's a girl), do Chinese have "special" ways of telling if it's going to be a boy or girl? For instance, based on the size of the bulge? Or how much the baby kicks, that type of thing?

Yes they do. Apparently, the position of the bump can tell if it'll be a boy or girl. If the bump is pointing up then it's likely to be a girl, if it points downwards or hangs low in general then it might be a boy. I've also heard that women who eat and drink a lot of acidic foods are likely to give birth to a girl, while alkaline foods tend to make baby boys.

Well I don't know about Chinese methods, but when my wife was pregnant with our kid, I had a look myself. I mean I got my head right up there. Freakiest shit i've ever seen. Little bugger kicked me right in the chin too.

Really? Didn't know that you're not allowed to know the baby's sex beforehand. Interesting. Makes sense.

They're not allowed to tell but the wife found out, rather craftily. We saw a couple of doctors over that period and she'd test them by saying stuff like "My sweet girl" to her stomache. The doctors reacted and the wife picked up on it. We knew from that stuff that it was a boy, the doctors practically told her. Good job too otherwise we were gonna bin it.
Yes, its called "illegal ultrasound" which they pay 2,000 yuan to have in special clinics hidden inside certain spas. My friend took his wife to one last year.
"If the woman has many spots on the forehead it will be a boy" this is a myth though.
I think they can only tell just before birth:
If it's a girl, she comes out very gracefully. If it's a boy, it explodes out of the mother's stomach like in the Aliens movies.
There are absolutely dozens of ways, and the are all 100% effective, 50% of the time.

The point of the joke was about inaccuracy, not accuracy. I found it amusing. You kind of destroyed it by stating the obvious, that getting a boy is not a 50/50 chance.
