Q: Do Chinese judge you for nationality or as you

I've been reading the posts

and it seams some of us have had a rough time on occasion

it always seams to be because of the f word (foreigner)

is it this or was it more personal?

I don't make friends easy as you know by how I write some of my posts

is it the same for you?

I read all the time on this site about Chinese having a special place in their heart for Americans (re: hate us).  But have yet to experience this, as I find it's quite easy to make friends here.  Sure, you'll meet the occasional dud who only wants to do business with a foreigner or make a foreigner friend...but overall, I feel like they judge me for me, and not as an American....otherwise they'd hate my guts, right?

GuilinRaf:

I too have heard the same thing re: Americans. My ex girlfriend once told me that when they heard about  September 11 on the news, she and her classmates cheered.

On the other hand, I can only think of two occasions where I have been treated either rudely or disliked just because of being American. Two incidents in nearly five years, I guess that is not so bad!

It's obvious to me that in many occasions they judge everyone, Chinese or not, before any words are ever spoken. They can't help themselves either. Rest assured, whether they say they like you or not, you are being analysed to the hilt. Gotta seek out your potential for their benefit, you see.

I've never been anything, here, but foreign skin and hair. Just like a Chinese man is never seen as anything more than a haircut and accessories or lack thereof. Or as they describe it: "People in China forget their own names."

They judge you as a foreigner first, as you second, if at all.

You know Macau was Portuguese and not Spanish don't you?

The question was not meant for people to hide where they are from however does where you come from have any influence on how you are treated in general

you cant change your heritage and you should be proud of it .

don't try to be something your not however you can develop yourself as time goes by

hope this helps

They ask me if I'm from America, and I say yes, I don't think I get treated differently from any other type of foreigner (if those particular people had ever met one before). If anything, I've always been treated nicely, and at the worst people are indifferent, but not more rude than usual. This may be because I am a girl? I don't know enough female expats to make a comparison. There have been people who only want to know me or make friends with me because I am a foreigner, and after the first time I see them, I usually don't have to deal with them again. I am not good at making friends, so I think the people who stick around are the ones worth keeping.

I have been in China for over 8 years now.  I have exactly ZERO close Chinese male friends.  The concept of friendship as we know it does not exist here.  It's all about guangxi and face.  I have a few friends that are women, but I don't consider them to be very close friends, simply because if an opportunity should arise where they can benefit from stabbing me in the back, they will.  I keep ALL Chinese people at arms length from me.  Sorry to say it, but these are not good people.  Maybe I just "don' t understand Chinese culture", but I'm pretty sure that's BS.  I know when people are good and when they're scumbags.  Any "friends"you make here are simply because it benefits them somehow..

I am leaving in about 1 month.  It can't come soon enough!

Zootown:

Wow... leaving China after 8 years. That must feel liberating. If it's not too personal, is it because of your job or just because you just couldn't take it here anymore? Do you live in a second tier city?

welcome to China, we like to make friends with all not matter foreigners or hongkong, or tawan, or south ,  we are different, that's the reason, we can be friend, if we are exactly the same, we can't be friends.

here is China, we have one ffith population, of course, have different opinion, for those come to China, but it didn't repesent all of Chinese people. so enjoy your time in China,

of course, be carefull for some bad man, whenever, where ever,

Well, as for me, some the Chinese citizens thought I was Kobe Bryant.. ... and sometimes they assume I'm a famous rap artist. It depends pretty much.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
