i hate wearing a suit in china, because im the only one in the room that has the suit right, striped ties on pattern shirts instead of solids, belt that wraps around to their back,white socks,black belt with brown shoes, they look like a bunch of x nfl quarterbacks who majored in home economics that talk bs on espn.

I'm confused by what this question is asking. The actual question "Do Chinese men...." seems to be nothing but a blatant dig at Chinese guys, while the inner comments "I was thinking of going to the tailor..." seems to be more about the association of suits with class in China. I guess this is a commentary about all of the ridiculously flashy suits you'll see guys wearing here (as well as the weird phenomenon of super long belts), as ambivalencemace notes?

I agree with the poster that I hesitate to have suits made at the tailor if they are just going to turn out looking like that. I recently learned of a tailor in Beijing that makes suits for 6000-7000 RMB that are apparently pretty amazing (they'd have to be for that price). In general, much of what makes a suit good is if it has a "full canvas" inside, which is pieced together specifically for your body shape and hangs a lot more naturally than more common, less expensive suits. Even in the US, having such a suit tailored costs a minimum of 1,500 dollars (from what I've read online).

I still haven't decided whether or not to get one of these suits made here, but I think the old moniker "you get what you pay for" certainly applies, at least to anyone considering having a suit made at a rinky dink corner tailor shop for 400-500 RMB...

When it comes to getting something custom made, tailored, etc, you have to be *VERY* specific about *EVERYTHING*. You can't just walk in and say "make me a nice black two button suit" and expect to pick up exactly what you had in mind a few weeks later.

One thing I've learned about Chinese people is that if you don't give them all the details, they won't ask you for them, they will just fill in the blanks themselves. That isn't always bad, but if you have something specific in mind it will leave you unhappy.

I suggest you do research on different types of fabric and fabric weight, different suit design styles, and of course, bring as many pictures as you can of the style you want, inside and out. You can never give too much detail!
