Q: Do e-bike alarms actually stop any theft or are they just a terrible annoyance?
Whenever the wind blows here there is a chorus of alarms reverberating through the area. In busy parking lots people are always brushing against the tightly parked e-bikes causing their alarms to sound. I'm curious as to how many people know of a case where a sounding alarm has foiled a theft.

I just about pushed an e-bike over the other day because of that alarm thing. Drives me nuts.
Funny thing is though, Chinese have absolutely No concept of Noise Pollution. Walk down any busy pedestrian shopping street, see how many shops set speakers outside and blare music. No one seems to give it a second thought. The blasting, never ending horns, the shrieking females, the shouting males ...

It certainly doesn't do much. However if you saw someone loading an e-bike into a van with an alarm screaming at 100%, wouldn't you at least take a picture?
That is the general idea of alarms (and locks) they aren't really designed to make theft impossible, just push the scum onto another, easier, target.

Very true. It doesn't stop theft, but it does make it noticeable enough (or hard enough) so that thieves go on to easier targets.
Good locks and an alarm are better than nothing. I even had a heavy chain for nights when I left the bike somewhere not so secure. When I parked in the Bat Cave I never even used a lock.
