Hi,
I need to go to HK to get my Z visa, and hopefully by then I will have all the documents needed. My question is that do I have to go through a visa agency and pay the 1200ish rmb? Can I just apply in the Chinese embassy and it would be the same 2-4 days?
Do I need to hire a visa agency? Do they make things easier for you? like shorter wait time in line at the embassy and that is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You can 'shorten' the line at the Embassy by coming early in the morning, and waiting in queue. When Embassy's doors open, waiting line is shortening fairly fast. At 1pm, there's only few people in queue. (Sep. 2012)
You'll fill your Visa application form, while waiting for Embassy's doors open, and if you have all required documents (don't forget Medical exam for some HK$ 2000), you can pay HK$ 600 (I think?) for passport pick up in 48h (2 working days).
I've never used Visa agency.

I agree, the Visa agents just rip you off. do it yourself.

I'd add: 'Medical exam doesn't need to be done in HK. Medical exam from China, not older than 6 M qualify, too. In China, ME is some 5 times cheaper than in HK.

Price for ME in China is different from Province to Province…..In HK cost is 1800 Rmb.

i only paid 400 HK$ in a visa agency for my Z visa. was reasonable and my company paid anyways.
if you have all the documents, i dont think you should use any agency
HK provides visa on arrvial basis so need of going to an agency if you have all the required documents

OP is asking about a Z visa and NOT a tourist visa and Z visas have to be applied for in his/her home country
Do some research and check the HK embassy web page. I used a visa agency as I remember the agency was faster than the embassy was going to be. Rules and processing times at the embassy change often so check ahead.
I went to the embassy myself. Cheaper and simple. No need for an agent.
