Q: Do I need a criminal record check to get a visa in Guangdong Province?

Not that I have anything to hide but, does anyone know that when applying for work in said province, is a c.r.c. mandatory province wide? Thanks in advance!

Depends on what visa you want.

I wish people would be a bit more precise with their questions.

How does that scene in "The holy grail" go?

"Whhattt... is the  unladen flight weight of a swallow? "

" Do you mean an European or African swallow? "

"Ehhh.."

wink

In Shenzhen, a city in Guangdong province requires an FBI for Americans if you're getting a Z visa in Hong Kong or Home country. If you're renewing your RP or moving your RP to a new company then a criminal check isn't required.

Why would Americans need one but not Canadians?

That's a great question, it's been asked in Wall Street every year, Only British and Americans need a criminal background check if its a new Z visa gig.  we got a Canadian couple last March and they asked the same thing. Maybe a better relationship with China and less violence.  I know Canada is special to Koreans, they adore all teachers from there.

I did not need it 2 years ago in GZ. But that was for a work permit, not a foreign expert certificate.

Pretty sure the rule only applies to teachers.

That's why I was asking the OP to be more specific.

Went through the process of getting my first Z visa (Residence Permit) last Sep-Nov, not sure what your situation is but I'm a UK citizen, based in Shenzhen and this was a non-teaching position. I was not required to provide any sort of criminal background check, however I did have to return back to the UK to obtain the Z visa.

I heard it was much easier being a Brit due to the connection with Hong Kong, but last year the rules and regulations changed apparently and I HAD to return to the UK to get the Z visa before returning to China for the 1 year residence permit.

sorrel:

when back home applying for the 'Z', chances are the Chinese embassy does a check of sorts.

Also it appears to be ad-hoc depending on job, province, your country of origin and sex (if you are male or female)

Really, it should be compulsory for everyone applying for an initial residence + work permit anywhere in China, especially teachers.
