Never seen anyone use them here and wonder if they're even accepted here.

I've never used them myself, butt....I would go to the nearest Chinese Bank, and ask about it.
I am guessing, probably they won't convert checks to Rmb, because China doesn't do much of the International banking, but you never know.
Traveler:
I seem to have missed something. What was your answer to the question, yes or no?
icnif77:
'Bu zhi dao!' was my answer, with suggestion to seek right info about cashing the checks at any Bank!
On one of my first trips to China, I brought some issued by Citibank back in USA. I went to Bank of china to cash them, with my passport, and everything was fine until I was asked to endorse them, which I did in front of them. They were $ 50 US dollars each, anbd I wanted to cash 10 of them. Only three were approved fo cashing, the other seven were rejected because my second signature did not match exactly the first one on the check. They wanted, and expected, "mirrow images" on each and every one of them.
Now, when you buy 100 each $ 50 dollars traveler checks and sign each one, your signature will vary to a small degree. Some traces will get bigger, some smaller, some sloppier, progressive worse as you get close to the 100 time signing. Somehow, Chinese officials wanted each signature on each check to be the "mirrow image" of the one existing there already. I even asked them how can it be OK to cash three with passport ID and siugnature check, and refuse seven more under the same name, consecutive check numbers. Of course, I got no reply !.I have never brought traveler checks back to China again, but since I do hate to travel with lots of cash, and I knew I would be coming over often, I opened an account here instead (2004), and have kept it since. I did wire transfer money to my local account everytime I came.
I've always been able to use my Australian debit card at Chinese ATMs, or internet banking to transfer money to a Chinese account.
