There's what you see in China, dear Vicky, and there is what you might see overseas.
About 50% of Americans are unrepentant racists; the other 50% are trying to move the country forward in a positive manner. A lot of pro's and cons here.
This Board suffers from an abundance of reprobate, sexist, sexually-inhibited, blue collar, uneducated, gross, crass, ill-sobered white males who would fit in perfectly in the Deep South, circa 1835.
Just discount those attitudes.
Some white folk around here are true colonialist types; others are human beings.
Victoria1987:
I hanged out a lot with my white friend, but I was always being left alone by the white people we met.Only my friend was chatting with other white people we met. I was wondering if they are racists or I may think too much.
philbravery:
I thought it was Matty ? or was it Silva ? or richi ? the gangs all here ohh well wondered when it would come out to play.
Mateusz:
Of all the problems you have, Vickster... thinking too much is not one of them.
And I resent Belle's generalization. It's totally false. I've been sober since breakfast.
i can not comment for anyone else, nor would i presume to.
i was lucky enough to be brought up in an environment that accepted people from any country as people.
No-one was any better than anyone else. Character is how i judge people, (yes i do judge people), not nationality.
I am not white. I am half white.
That gives me a free pass to be as racist as I want without any repercussions. If anyone even complains, all I have to do is pull out the "race card" and accuse them of persecuting me for being different. I look down on everyone, including WHITEY!!!!!!!! DOWN WITH WHITEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KILL WHITEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robk:
LoL... green people hate white people!
Down with Hulk! You used to be white until your anger poisoned you!
Now you just a green eyed monster!
Hulk:
Hey, it's not my anger that poisoned me, it's the gamma radiation. Anger just triggers my psychotic hulkfest episodes.
Well maybe, because most other ''races'' hate us simply because we are white. What a silly idea. I have cultural differences, I'm more independant, open minded and more outgoing than most Chinese, but am I really different, no.
In my country we have many races, cultures and shades of skin colour. Lot's of different people with something in common. They are all citizens of my country. Everyone has the same rights as everyone else.
I am proud of my country for that.
My daughter is half British and half Chinese. She was born here and has a Chinese birth certificate. But even my Han Chinese wife says she will never be accepted as being Chinese by her compatriots. Because she is not pure Chinese blood.
That's something not to be proud of.
ScotsAlan:
Thanks Hulk.
I see national borders as the most pointless invention ever of mankind. Those invisible walls between nations are the fuel that feeds racism.
Hulk:
Can't really agree on the invisible wall philosophy. Too many people have too many different beliefs, and it's a really complex issue.
philbravery:
if you are talking about the UK as your wonderful tolerant country ,then try telling that to Lee Rigby's family
ScotsAlan:
@philbravery
I don't recall anything about that being a racist murder.
It was a horrible crime committed because of religious nationalistic beliefs.
Because the perpetrator and the victim were of different races you choose to make it a race issue. I see this crime as being no different from the white on white crimes committed during the Troubles.
CARLGODWIN1983:
Phil,The Lee Rigby murder was about religious beliefs, not race. Have you even read what the attackers said when they killed him that day?
Mateusz:
I've never heard British people claim someone has a "British face" as opposed to a "foreign face", or Americans claim someone has an "American face".
It says a lot that someone can "look Chinese" or has a "Chinese face".
ScotsAlan:
Mateuez
I said nothing about anyones faces.
Personally, I feel disapointed with myself that I describe my daughter as half British/ half Chinese. I should be able to just say she is Chinese. If we were in the UK my daughter would be British.
Same little person with the same face. But being in a different place would give her a different label.
I hate labels myself. China as a nation really needs to think about this.
jackdanial:
why do u have to mention han ? u know u r being racist as well by saying han chinese why couldnt u just said chinese
ScotsAlan:
Because Han is Chinese. Anything other than Han is officially a minority. Same as my daughter. I am not being racist to single out the Han as the dominant race. I am only following Government policy.
No, but there are idiots everywhere
Scandinavian:
Most countries that follow the UN Human Rights would have laws that means people can get sanctioned for racism.
Not at all,
My best friends growing up were Chinese, Native-Canadian, Afghan and Pakistani.
My aunt is a Filipino... my wife is Chinese...
I judge people by their manners, their ability to respect other people and their intelligence. Race has nothing to do with it.
I should ask you do most Chinese look down on other people?
Just because a guy isn't talking to you doesn't make him a racist. Maybe he has no idea what to say to you? In China, 100% of girls expect conversations to be started by the men, which can be a bit tiresome, especially if you can't find a common point or something interesting to point out... Plus he may be ignoring you for those few girls who are actually taking initiative to be outgoing and fun.
side thought, it's just weird how people add your QQ or Wechat and then expect YOU to start the convo, eh?
Samm11:
100% agree with the side thought. so weird. funny, too. haha
Robk:
Strongly agree with the side thought... it is ridiculous.
It's like they are scared of losing face or something. That's why the Chinese "face" system is the most tiresome and boring thing I have EVER come across. It's like saying "Okay, I have given you the opportunity to talk to me, now please start entertaining me because I gave you enough face by just adding you."
I am so happy when I come across a Chinese person that actually have something interesting to say... doesn't matter in Mandarin or English. Because even learning Chinese doesn't help the fact that Chinese are extremely poor communicators.
I would have to say that in general Chinese are the most Racist people on the planet , they change the rules to keep foreigners from staying , we are judged on the colour of our skin, (some more than others ) you can't have a business unless you have a Chinese partner, our drivers license is not reconised in China , they stare and touch us as if we are a toy and to top it off even when we are in our own country Chinese constantly refer to us as the Foreigner . so you tell what your thoughts are on that !
belle_watson:
Forgive me then my dearest, sweetest, most cuddly armpit of a kangaroo, then why did you marry one and why do you even bother coming here?
icnif77:
I didn't know, you can find 'value' in 'kangaroo's armpit'. I must go to Oz one day.
philbravery:
my dear Ding-a-Ling /Matty ; I thought it better than meeting trailer trash like yourself . This game is the best present I could have hoped for , sort of like that frogger game the kids play with the hammer ,
belle_watson:
Honey child, Phillip, the sweetest posterior of a Queensland crocodile that ever existed, you wouldn't be a contender to get into my front door.
The men in my life need to be sober, STD free, no prior criminal convictions, educated, British, Canadian or American only.
I won't tell you which one of the above qualties you fail on -- or is it more than one?
Kisses my sweet egg of the dodo,
Belle
Robk:
I find Koreans far more racist.
Chinese are ignorant racist, Koreans are maliciously racist. And far more Xenophobic in my experience. Even when they compliment you on something, they have to assure the rest of the pack that Koreans are still far more greater. "Teacher you are handsome... looks around the class... but of course you aren't as handsome as Korean men." or "Teacher you are very pretty but this Korean pop-star is prettier than you." Oh okay, thank you?
Errr... In my "white people country" (France), schools have kids of all colors, teachers of all colors. I don't know *one* town with white people only. Towns have asian mayors, arabic mayors, black mayors... asian, arabic, blacks ministers, deputies, you name it. Unlike here, a naturalized migrant can be part of the society and become an official if he/she wish so. We are mixed from day 1. We are taught from day 1 at the school, that being French is not a skin matter, it's about being a citizen of France, speaking French and a couple of values. We have a high rate of mixed couples *all kind of mixes*, *over several generations*. We have racists lobbies, groups ? Yes. Are they noisy ? Yup. Anti-arabs, anti-white, etc. So it's no just a yes/no answer. What I say is true for quite a few European countries. Never been long enough to USA, never been in OZ and NZ, can't tell there either. I can speak for China, however. China is hundred years behind my country on that chapter, being casually racist and refusing to call it "racism"
Scandinavian:
The big colonial powers of the past generally have a good mix of people. With a good mix of people comes also a good number of assholes. I think most of Europe has people from all over the world, where the majority are just normal people living on par with the natives. It's the few troublemakers aka racists that are making a lot of fuss.
This is a process that was started 100 years ago. All EU countries have laws to give equal rights to all (within a set of rules) unlike China that has laws to give differentiated rights to all.
belle_watson:
Dear Dr. Monkey,
This is a wonderful, platonic view of your country.
The last time I was in Paris, last summer, the suburbs outside of Paris were all on fire. The Magrehbins or whatever were rioting against discrimination in French society by the white French against them. Landing at CDG Airport, you could see the smoke for miles and miles and miles.
Paris itself is pure white and rich. All of the poor and marginalised have been basically moved to the suburbs.
Then there were the riots in Lyon that summer by the Roma were felt that they were being harassed by the police.
And the riots for 2- 3 days when I was in Marseille, again by people of color and people from North Africa.
I do not want to be difficult, I really don't, but I can honestly say that I found France to be the most subtly racist country in Western Europe.
I also forgot to mention the numerous bombings of synagogues in Paris by the French extreme right and then there was that really nasty little incident of a 10-year old Roma girl being separated from her family and deported to Albania, or somewhere like that. The family remained in France. The 10-year old was deported. Hardly what a great former colonial power should be doing.TMaster:
Immigration and racism in France is a very, very complex issue that can't be compared to China in any way. Not even with the UK or the USA. France has a quite particular vision of what its citizenship means (not in any way better or worse than any other country, just different) and the modern situation combined with its past leads to a handful of paradoxes.
On the paper, France wants people to adhere to its values, which originally didn't pose much problem when north africans were massively invited in, following Italians, Polish before then. Hell, France even invited ex-criminals without identity that were willing to be fight for the country in exchange for a second chance, and that was called the Foreign Legion (I'm not glorifying it, the Foreign Legion could be a traumatic experience, but that was part of the deal).
That was working as long as some industrial groups could fulfill their agendas, which were to import cheap labor. Then globalization came by, and the following generations of immigrants were completely abandonned socially speaking, because not needed anymore, and then came violence and delinquence.
Then it escalated into defiance and discrimination from the "original" population.
And now here we are, with a country playing a game of "Adopt my values." "Then give me a job and a chance", where the only losers are the middle and poor classes on both sides, that didn't ask for anything in the first place and now are opposed to each other, in a way that's just too convenient so the real responsibles, which are the industrials and politics, never have to face the consequences of the mess they created.
The history of immigration and discrimination has nothing to do with that of China, where people (re)discovered only recently that the boarders of their country were not the end of the road. Therefore have not theorized it nor assimilated it yet in terms of society. And probably never will, the tendancy is not inclined towards giving foreigners any sort of real long term place.
Yes statistically whites especially of European ancestry are the tallest race.
This isn't a logical question... you need a psychologist.
treating people as an individual in my personal relationships keeps racism way down my list of concerns, but the actions of groups in different countries can change your perception and put racisim back at the top of my concerns. the absolutely most racist place on earth is all of africa, slaves in sudan, red haired fula tribesman running guinea and not letting darker skin tribesmen have government positions even with a college degree. having traveled all over africa, people in the rest of the world dont have a clue, in 1987 sleeping with a beautiful fula girl who cried because i used a condom, if i have a baby with lighter skin, my life and will be much better was her reason. i never forgot that all these years later, did i do her a favor or harm her future and what in the hell is wrong with the world.
tsonj:
Blame that one on slavery.
The mentality that is left over from slavery is the driving force behind Africans and how they see each other in terms of skin color. I wonder how long you stayed in Africa to base your view points. Sometimes a tourist view can distort perception and knowledge. Africa has always had tribal wars, but the wars that developed because of the skin color is something that was inherited from the end of the 15th century to the beginning of the 16th century and has continued even to this day. Answer the question objectively and try not to point too much.ambivalentmace:
ive been to every country in africa and spent 8 years in the french foreign legion there before the EU made france cut the legions down to one in africa and france invited me to retire early.
Jíliú.hé:
hey what is the foreign legion like these days i here that it is filled mainly with French middle class looking for adventure now.
DrMonkey:
Actually, 25% of the Foreign Legion is made-up of French citizen. Lots of East-Europeans nowadays. There are some Chinese ^^
White people seem to be the only people who actually teach their kids racism is wrong.
Most white people recognise that there are people from many other countries, who like themselves are just people. We accept people as individuals, some we like and some we don't. Unlike China which is hugely racist, all they see is waiguo and zhonguo, they haven't even got the sense to realise that Chinese in this world are in the minority, 75% to 80% of people in this world are not Chinese. When they just put every foreigner into that category of foreigner it just shows their ignorance and stupidity. Do you ever wonder why the "western" countries are so far ahead of China, it is because of their openness to others and other ideas. China is still a closed country as far as the mentality of most of its population.
Most white people look down on other races that are racist...
regretfully , most nations have prejudice or racism to some degree . Some more open than others.
I am an First Nations of the USA, Native American 7/8 red man 1/4 white, even among my own there is prejudice and racism. I learned to overcome that. I educated my self and had good mentors.I don't judge by skin color , only their actions and what i see coming from their heart.
jetfire9000:
He listens to a lot of Rob Zombie. "More Human than Human"
If you listen to it, it has that Jingle Bells tune to it, so it's in season.
This is a stupid question. You can't group all white people together.
We will have racism for long time. It seems to be part of the human nature. I am also only half white. My fathers ancestry goes back to France and Norway. My mother is North American Indian (Lakota Sioux). They've been trying to get "Whitey to go home for centuries now. (that goes for the black white-man too) My fathers' Mother told my mother how lucky she was that I was white. In retrospect she was right. Being a native on an oversized concentration camp is hell. The red man and the white man do not see eye to eye. On the other hand maybe that is why I am used to seeing poverty in China. I have learned to look for good in all people.
Hulk:
Whoa, another native around these here parts. I be a Navajohohoho.
