The are very few nursing homes in China. Due to the one child policy China is an increasingly older population. China’s elderly population is growing rapidly while the number of young adults is shrinking. Basically, there is no other choice but to have your parents live out their last days at home with you.

Funnily enough, this is also used as an excuse to attack the west and prove the greatness of Chinese culture. They claim that the importance of family is higher in China but I also imagine a large amount of elderly people in need of 24h medical care which they do not recieve.

i've met 2 girls in hohhot who were made to stay home to care for their parents. they both were the "2nd child" (i mean they had a sibling) the parents wanted 1 child to get married and the less fortunate one to live at home to take care of them. talk about selfish

actually this explains many peoples reaction to the death of the elderly. they react with no emotion what so ever. i guess that is why you dont want to give them the medical care they need, get them into the ground quicker.

They stay at home and look after the grandchildren while the parents work. i.e. they live with their children.

Most stay at home and their child and his or her spouse care for them. I've heard, though, that this tradition is starting to become unpopular with the younger generation. Someone told me that she doesn't expect her son to care for her and her husband when they grow old.

Stay at home. Nobody will take care of the elderly except their children.
Depending on the social wellfare, or nursing home? For 99% of the old population, that's only a legendary story.

that is one of the best thing among chinese, they love their elders and be with them till death but in western culture it is opposite which is really a sad story.

jahan: they do it because they are forced to take care of their parents by law. plus it is best for the sick elderly to get professional care

which is why they seem happy when they finally die
