Someone told me the other day that a Hong Kong-based company owns and operates Line 4 in Beijing. Is this true? Is it a special situation, or are most/all subway lines like this? I was under the impression that they were government-run. With Beijing's insanely cheap fares, I cannot imagine that this is a profitable enterprise for a private company...
Peter, my gut reaction was no, that can't be possible but indeed you are correct.
Look here:
The Beijing Subway is a rapid transit rail network that serves the urban and suburban districts of Beijing municipality. The subway is owned by the city of Beijing and has two operators, the wholly state-owned Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corp., which operates 13 lines, and the Beijing MTR Corp., a public-private joint-venture with the Hong Kong MTR, which manages the other two lines.
