Reverse wumaos ? What, you mean people paid by 'western' governments to disseminate information?

I don't know, but I do know the Labour Party UK, did 'encourage' (not financially as far as I'm aware) party members to access UK political blogs to 'spread the word', and in the famous Damian McBride case their members were inventing blatant lies about political opponents, not sure if that's the same thing.

To be honest, I'm not that bothered, as long as they're not abusive post what they like, I don't have to read it.

I sometimes knowingly go overboard cause nationalists piss me off, but in general I think, like most people, I have a lot of positive things to say about China, but never get the chance cause of nationalists on line making me irritated.

I think the western governments and corporations do, indeed, manipulate public opinion on the internet, just as China tries to do with wumaos. The difference is, the western government and corporations merely have to ensure that the Chinese people, via Weibo and blogs, get the truth of the matter, or stick closely to the original story they spin.

Wumaos, however, are far less skilled and educated than their western counterparts, and get so tied up in telling lies and creating new stories, that they invariably get caught out, and the Chinese government hits new lows in the credibility stakes.

China could save a lot of money by fining wumaos for each unsuccessful attempt they make at moulding public opinion. In fact, China could probably make a tidy sum out of it.

nevermind:

Well, we do have "Wu mao" types. I mean look at people on news sites who are pro Obama or GOP to the point of lunacy. In Canada you see them all the time, the reigning government can do no wrong. They are paid posters. I remember years ago the govermnet in BC was busted when some guy called a local indo radio show and started all this glowing praise pretending to be some regular guy who phoned in, but it turned out he was a communications officer for the libs and someone recognized his voice. So it's hard to belive they don't pull that online too. .

Yes of course - they are called "shills" and there were hundreds of them all over the blogs during the Daioyu Island dispute and when the Bo Xi Lai crap hit the news.

I suppose it stands to reason that China copied the idea from somebody else.

Well, yeah, their are paid political operatives that work in other countries. In the US we have entire political movements, like the buzz the swept Obama into office in 08 or Tea Party two years later, that are carefully tailored to appear to "authentic."  But then again, I'm not sure that this is exactly the same as what China does with the wu mao. (What would the plural be? Wu mao ren men?) That said, I'm reasonably sure that I've run into the Chinese version on various comment boards (after all you can never be completely sure) but I can't say the same of those that work in the US. But then maybe that's because people from my own culture have a better idea of how to influence me without my being aware of it.

TheMechanic:

VERY well said.  10/10. As you said, people like yourself might not even realize that you could have been brainwashed into being an unpaid 'reverse wumao'. The internet is like the ultimate wumao breeding ground!

loke/ old major/ no balls / marty/ hugh g/ mechanic etc: first of all matt doesn't strike me as a person that can be manipulated or brainwashed. his arguments are fact based unlike yours "how'd you get the rolex"

manipulated into supporting sb/sth is not the same as being brainwashed. (chinese should learn not to use translated english) people are upset with the us govt. some thought obama would be the change that was needed. before that some thought the tea party would be the change that was needed. both have lost support over time which led to the occupy wall street movement which was a rumbling or small eruption of people expressing their continued anger with politicians screwing up our country.

never in the history of the internet did the us govt ever hire people to pose as joe netizen to try puck with people's minds by spreading propaganda. they don't need to   because americans are free to form our own opinions. so all they have to do is find an issue that the people divided on and make that the key issue (gay marriage, abortion) while the people fight over thiose issues the reps and dems work together to pass the bills they want which usually screw american people. manipulation not brainwashing. this is exactly how i know you never set foot outside of china. if you were a brit you would be able to knock the uk based on information that comes from actual life experience and not google. 30 more days until i'm in harbin .

That really wasn't the point I was making. There is a difference between being persuaded by an argument that that is crafted, all be it cynically, to win my support in a system where in policy decisions are dictated by popular support, and an authoritarian system using paid trolls to create the the impression of public consent.

Well, the "buzz" didn't sweep Obama to power and to claim it did is a massive overstatement. But, those movements I wouldn't call Wu Mao as they are maybe covert, but they aren't Wu Mao in the sens of a paid army of people paid to go online and support the government and twist political opinion.

mech/ noballs/ old maj/ (i'm getting tired) : if i said the sky is blue. and you said i agree with you the sky is red. you are not agreeing with me. you are purposely twisting what i said and acting like you agree with what i said. it is a wumao tactic. if someone skims through the post it would be easier to see yours (because it is shorter) and they would assume that is what matt said.

but lets get back on topic. the bottom line is this , no govt is pathetic enough to hire people to pose as foreign nationals to say nice things about china except china.

i see what you are trying to do. the hughg type (reasonable/ rational defense of china) account is not going to do it here. you need to use the loke type account (obvious wumao to be a distraction). but like i said . china is the only govt pathetic and weak enough to where they need to hire people to say nice things about them. in other countries, some people naturally support their govt or not. and they debate each other. wealthy individuals manipulating the masses in an effort to take advantage of their frustrations (koch bros. and the tea party) is not the same as a hired goon by the govt.

I'm gunna go on record here and actually say that I am calling you stupid. At least you're stupid if you think you're agreeing with me. You're opinion, that there isn't much of a difference between a paid political internet commenter and a person with a political opinion, and mine, there are people in the US that shill for a particular policy or candidate and that these people might actually be much better in remaining unnoticed than people who are paid money to get on internet message boards and spout CCP talking points, are very different. But that alone isn't what makes you stupid. Just a troll with poor language comprehension skills. What makes you stupid is that you really think that we don't know who you really are, and  that we believe that you're a guy who showed up only a week a week or so ago. We know that you're the same jerk that been trolling here for months. I told you once that I hope something bad happens to you, and I still do. You suck.. And if you really don't like hearing those things, please leave and don't come back.

a govt paying people to pose as normal netizens/ or people of a different nationality to spew govt propaganda is pathetic. it is an act that shows weakness, insecurity and small mindedness. especially when it is a poorly kept secret and poorly executed.

Yes, it's probably most prevalent in the US and Europe. Us 'democrats' like to do things the right way. Hell yeah.
