When in London recently I saw some kids on a bus doing their Chinese homework. They were from a normal state school as well which indicates that Chinese is being taken on at a national level... how about where you're from?

In Pakistan, Chinese is a compulsory subject to be taught till grade 8.
In my home province, it's taught at the university as an option, and some high schools propose Chinese as the mandatory 2nd foreign language (traditionally, it was either Spanish or German). Since wine is a big business there, and customers are increasingly Chinese, people in the wine industry take Chinese classes, many can talk a bit now.
In Canada, we have to learn English and French...
But we are allowed to take complimentary choice courses like Spanish, German, Chinese or Japanese.
Are you sure it wasn't one of those courses?
humbug:
Yeah possibly, but these kids were pretty young, like eleven and you don't normally get optional courses at that age (maybe times have changed though)... also it's interesting because education of languages in Britain is notorious for being woefully inadequate, so it's cool to see that the education system is branching out a bit
We have 10 years of Chinese and advanced Chinese lessons from primary yo secondary school. If you fail, you cannot go on to the next level. After that, it is an option at pre-university.
Yes, in the Portland School District in Oregon they recruiting Chinese teachers. My former Chinese tutor now works in one high school.
In some schools Chinese is optional
in University, Chinese is a language available in the Foreign Language Department, along with European languages, (English included) and Japanese
Yeah, it's a language option for schools - I think primary and secondary. My mate's neighbour is learning it, so when I see her every year or so, I try to get some words out of her... I think her writing is much better than her speaking.
