Yes. Because just like the Chinese, they are all the same and fit nicely into one big stereotype. Am I right?

thewetblanket:

Just wanted to add that my previous remark was (obviously) made in sarcasm. I loath the fact that my fellow countrymen are viewed as what is seen on TV or by the lowest common denominator that is represented online. I know I should be looking inward and realize that it exists for a reason. I know America is a big boy and can defend itself, but I still feel some sadness for all of the hate.

It's the "Brits" that go in for self-loathing here,

mArtiAn:

I'm not self-loathing, i'm self-effacing. It actually shows confidence, but clearly on a level you're not quite in touch with. In future i'll puff my chest up and bark my superiority, how would that suit you?

A little article from the Times (murdoch mouth piece) for you MissA, it may explain a thing or two:-

To listen to a conversation between Britons about their careers, say, or educational histories, an observer from a more forthright culture might be forgiven for assuming the participants were morbidly depressed. Chances are they'd be wrong. Self-deprecation is an inescapable part of British discourse. The only socially acceptable way to talk about one's achievements is to diminish them. The affection held for that paragon of self-mockery, Stephen Fry, is testament to the national love of this brand of humour. The UK is, after all, a country where showing off is considered the height of bad form and boastfulness regarded as the very height of vulgarity. Charm and wit, by extension, are demonstrated by making oneself the butt of one's own jokes. Outsiders might conclude that this tendency to self-effacement reflects the UK's diminished global status as a former imperial power. But don't be fooled. Times columnist Matthew Parris argues that this tendency is, in fact, a subtly disguised form of self-aggrandisement. "British self-deprecation is actually quite boastful," he says. "Its primary purpose is to show how relaxed, at ease and confident you are. It's a sign of being so in command that you can undersell yourself." So is British self-deprecation just one big humblebrag? We really are useless, aren't we, utterly useless.

I sometimes have an 'inferiority complex' about EuroPeeps,,,  because I was raised to admire the refined Western European lifestyle as the pinnacle of achievement. I have some refined behavior, but I do admit I feel a bit lacking sometimes compared to the Western European aristocrat.

Inferior feelings to Chinese/oriental?   omg.   Have you ever spent time in china? I have a good five years, close to ten in the Orient. I have yet to meet a Chinese person I consider to be highly intelligent; let alone profoundly knowledgeable about anything; let alone intellectually rapacious. I hate to say this in a mean way, but I consider to have been born Chinese in Red China is to have been born cursed. I have known several delightful young Chinese folk who have said basically the same thing to me.

I am about 2/3rds through 'Jude The Obscure'. Thank you Mr Hardy for reinforcing my inferiority complex.  ........but I preferred 'Tess'.

Yeh, I can't agree with you on this i'm afraid, I really do think that there are a great, great many VERY intelligent people in this country. I mean, for one thing, in England to play chess is considered an intellectual pursuit, but to play it here is simply a national past-time, and I play both international and Chinese chess and they are both equally challenging and intellectually demanding. Also I have noticed over the past 7 years a surprising number of talented classical musicians on my travels. I have honestly been shocked at how common it is, in whichever of the various apartment blocks i've lived, to hear someone outside my window across the way or upstairs, playing the piano or the violin, and the general standard of musicianship has been more than impressive. It's always classical and personally i'd like to hear a little Jellyroll Morton or Stephane Grapelli sometimes, so there's no points for originality, but I can't take anything away from them for intellectual prowess.

11 years 24 weeks ago

Jnusb416:

I don't think that those things prove intellect. For starters, chess is a logical game, a game of skill. Some people are good at it, some are not. If a person is not good at chess, it doesn't mean they are stupid. As for instruments, you can become skilled at playing an instrument even if it is not a talent, just by practicing a lot. Believe me, I would play piano well if I actually practiced, even though I am not talented at it. Again, not actually a sign of intelligence, just a matter of skill.

11 years 24 weeks ago

mArtiAn:

Chess is a logical game? I think you're playing in the same ball-park, or otherwise what is your definition of intelligence? And a skill game? Is it bollocks! Football is a skill game, chess is about logic and anticipation. Wholly a game of the intellect. As for music I was raised by two music teachers, a pianist/international championship, young musicians finalist and a french horn player/member of the LPO, LSO and RPO, and I can assure you, practise does not equate to musical talent. Case in point, a twelve year old girl who lives upstairs from me started playing the piano about six months ago and is now playing at a level that, had I not heard her play her first note, I would assume was the playing of a student with two years of study behind them.

You surprise me Jnus, I honestly had the impression you were smarter than to jump on this 'look down on China' bandwagon, and be able to recognize the sparkling intellects of many of its citizens.

Jnusb416:

Obviously you were not reading closely on my comment about instruments. I said that you can gain musical skill by practicing a lot. Talent is a completely different thing. Some people are talented, others are not, but talented or not, you can gain musical skill by practicing. Geez.

I don't. However, I've noticed many times that Europeans have a superiority complex over North Americans.

Some naive Americans might think that Chinese people are superior workers but as most of us who have seen people napping and playing QQ games on the job here know, that's quite untrue.

It seems to me there's a distinct divide growing among our various nations, and it's something I find very unwelcoming indeed. I do understand Loke's 'mirror' thing, though i've told him myself that he seems to favour using it against Americans, even if the person he's replying to isn't American himself. Loke, shammme on you sir, you baaaad boy.

So what I propose is that we make a rota of comments by way of what is and what is not acceptable, and divide it across the day as such:

7am till 11 am, all comments must be very touchy-feely, devoid of racial bias and should all contain at least one smiley face.

11am till 4pm, all comments should be honest but polite. Generalizations are to be forbidden and a strict 'no racial slur' rule should be enforced by pain of a spanking on the bottom.

4pm till 9pm, comments are to reflect decency, though a certain edgy tone may be found acceptable, if not encouraged.

9pm till 2am, comments are allowed to be reasonably raw, the generalization rule may be broken, but only on rare occasions and when accompanied by an adult.

2am till 7am, is to be a no-holds barred, all-out, race-attack, verbal fist-fight, in which terms like wop, pom, yank, jig, chink, spik, cracker, slope and goomba are not only to be allowed but should be absolutely compulsory.

No. And when can we go back to random expat's bitching about how they're pretty sure that the guy at the local fruit market rips them off? I mean without having to hear about how Uncle Sam is using the World Bank as leverage against Nicaraguan Banana farmers. I miss that version of this place.

Anyway, the old way is so much better. It gave people a chance to unwind and swap funny stories. Like that one about the cab driver tried to convince my wife to divorce me and marry his son. Now I just spend my evening looking at spread sheets and reading over analysis various pundits and experts to support whatever point I might be arguing. And all I get in return is "hmmm...well that certainly doesn't feel true" and then some stupid anecdote.

Again, if you want to prove that your right, research the other viewpoints and report back - I really find it hard to believe there isn't any as have read many different viewpoints on China over the last couple of years. Beyond that, I've been commenting here for well over a year so I am well aware of the types of things that get said, and, strictly speaking questions like "What's the ultimate sign that you've been China-ized?" or "What's your favorite gapping hole in Chinese education?" and the answers they attract frankly aren't the hate filled rants you make them out to be. I didn't issue a death threat. I said that I hoped that you die in a fire, not that I have any intention of seeing you burnt alive.

But to answer your question, I graduated university with degrees in Economics and English Rhetoric. My minor was in History, not that you asked. I'm not teaching economics at the present time, although I have in the past, but reason I try to pay attention to these things is that the US housing bubble burst when I was only a few weeks shy of graduating, which all but dashed the hopes that a lot of people in my position had of getting jobs right out of school. So now I try to keep an eye on macroeconomic trends to avoid getting stuck in another bad situation. In 2010, it looked like China was the place to be, but having lived here and having looked into the way that their economy operates first hand I have to say that the US is simply starting to look more attractive. The lack of transparency in finance, an over inflated housing market, and intuitionalized corruption in banking and regulation look an awful like what was happening in the US economy under Bush the lesser. While in the US the stimulus created or saved 3.3 million jobs, property values are back up,  manufacturing made gains last year, and unemployment is under 8%, which is down from around 11% in 2010. If I were from the UK I don't think that I would chance it, as engaging in deficit reduction in the face of a recession is a recipe for  high unemployment and a sluggish recovery. Luckily, that's David Cameron and Nick Clegg's problem, and not mine.

I'm sorry it's hard to type I am laughing.

And I'm not American.

I am Canadian, but one thing I like about Americans is they don't have "inferiority" complexes. If they feel something in their nation isn't as good as something in another they will come out and say it in an unabashed way. You get this alot with healthcare discussions between Canadians and Americans. And those who disagree its better elsewhere actually mean it when they say that.

The undeniable opinion is that one's American cousins are not, one might say, quixotic in the face of criticism. On the other hand, to give a balanced and non-xenophobic perspective (guess who got a ban warning), one might advance the opinion that thicker skin is sometimes required in the maelstrom of opinion that is the fecundity of our overall verbiage. Vis-a-vis, and ipso facto, I profess to adhere to a somewhat uncommon notion that one's opinions of another country on this 3rd rock are meaningless with regards to the overall ontological position we must all aspire to possess -- not that all are capable/desiring of doing. In summation, my grapevines await your salutations. Troll out.

********************************************************************************************
The U.S. has decided to wage war against those who dare to go out with sensitive information about the country, silence them or allow them to 'disappear.' This is probably the background for why Assange is now stuck on Equadors Embassy.

USA stands for so much shit in this world, but their citizen are to stupid to understand it because US is a darn good manipulator BUT THAT TIME IS OVER!

Do British citizens still feel butthurt about getting their redcoat arses handed to them some 200+ years ago by a ragtag group of minutemen militia (yeah, I know...a little help from the French, thanks guys).  Do Europeans still feel some shame in needing poor little America's (at the time...) help for World Wars one and two?  Do the Chinese still feel embarrassed how the western powers walked over them in the pre-Mao era?

If you really think American citizens have an inferiority complex when it comes to any other nation, region, culture, etc on this planet.....well, I LOL'd.  Especially referencing the possibility I, as a US citizen, might feel inferior towards the Chinese.  Been here 2 years+, still waiting for that to happen.

That's not to say I feel a SUPERIORITY complex towards all those fine folks....but inferiority?  C'mon "mate"....

You guys that are always bashing Americans on here are just as guilty of bigotry as the people you have your sights aimed at.  Hypocrites.

lokethebloke:

I haven't been bashing anybody, just reflecting the bile back at the instigators.   Why don't you and others read carefully what I have been posting and stop jumping to conclusions because by doing so it does tend to show up your inferiority complex.

I will leave it at yes, I do understand what a mirror is and I have said earlier in this thread that I am saddened by the way in which American's are viewed. Feel free to bash America's policies and what our government is doing on a global scale. I have no control over that. To say a blanket statement about Americans in general is somewhat offensive to the ones out there who do not represent what people are saying.

I'm in agreement there TWB; Loke, all you seem to be doing is antagonizing people and creating a divide amongst the various online nationals. What makes sense to you doesn't necessarily make sense to others and in the meantime you're insulting a number of people who really don't deserve it. You can't push a square peg into a round hole, you just come off as someone bashing at shit with a hammer.

Blanket,

I've not been bashing americans and all things america, I've just been copying, reflecting and mirroring what some americans and others have been throwing at the chinese over the years.   What they say and do demeans the rest of us and I for one don't want to be hated by the chinese.

As you can see the reaction to the mirroring has been an enormous amount of hate and bile swiftly deflected at me by those who've been controlling this site for years..   So be it, it shows them up for what and who they are and does me no harm whatsoever.

Fair point martI,   here's one I wrote earlier  -

I can't tell the americans from their puppies, puppets, poodles or pandas.   So I'm sorry for any flack that has come the way of innocent bystanders, collateral damage happens quite often when americans, their puppies, puppets, poodles and pandas are involved in any kind of conflict.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
