Q: Do you also find the bread selection in Carrefour really disappointing?

Went to Carrefour at the weekend with high expectations. I thought since it's a French chain, I'm bound to get some great bread and baked goods there. But no so! They only offered a meagre selection of rock hard baguettes and sweet bread. Their croissants were disgusting too! Two words:LET DOWN!

Yes, I agree with you.  French bread was a total disappointment for me too.  I was told by a friend that they do not use wheat flour here in China to make bread, and this is why the results are so frustrating.

I did end up sinking 4,000 Rmb for an oven, and do make my own bread with wheat flour, and I am getting better at it.  I do love French bread with garlic and butter with my meals, especially with soups.

This depends upon the locality of the Carrefour, I think.  I have found the Carrefours in Guangzhou to be so-so on the one hand and the local RT Mart (out of Taiwan) to have a much better bread selection, foreign goods selection, etc., etc.

The same with Metro -- some Metro's have great selections, others do not.

Auchan tends to have a much more international selection of things and most Auchan's tend to have in-store minibakeries that turn out reasonably acceptable breads of all kinds.

I think the selection of bread in china overall is a big disappointment- I haven't been able to find decent French or Italian bread anywhere..

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...
