Q: Do you and your wife/husband have a shared bank account?

It is interesting to see what the differences are between Chinese and foreign couples, and I am just wondering if shared bank accounts are possible in China with a foreigner involved?

Also, if your wife doesn't work does she have full access to your money? I know this is normal, or at least common, abroad but I once heard a Chinese friend say that he has his wife on a budget, and I was a little bit shocked (she is home with the kids all day long, not sitting at home doing nothing)...

Shared. That implies I have access to it..... hmmmm, so no.

Actually we have each our account and card, because it isn't possible (or wasn't at the time) to get one account with two unionpay cards. We don't have hers and mine, we just have ours (except when the dog is not behaving, then there is "mine")

So a married couple where one is a foreigner can't have a joint bank account? Or do joint bank accounts just not exist?

I've heard some people have joint accounts, but we haven't been able to procure one.  So, I let my wife handle it all.  The less time I spend involved with Chinese bureaucratic nonsense the better.

We don't have a joint account *yet*, but we plan to do so once out of China. There's no my money and her money, it's ours. She gently complains that I'm too frugal, and she's not the kind to buy stuffs on a whim.

Here, she have the Chinese bank credit card, because ... not sure why actually, it was more convenient or something like that. I don't really care. We always ask each other before buying anything.

just for the sake of consistency. We HAD a joint account before we came to China !

I have had a joint bank account through ICBC since before we were married. There is no card option so any withdrawals require BOTH of us to go to the bank, me with passport, her with Chinese ID. Deposits can be made at the bank or via ATM.

It seems, from my experience that this is a bit uncommon and was only possible because we both had existing ICBC accounts but we had to go the main branch in our city. The sub branch couldn't or wouldn't do it. It was my impression that no one at the sub branch had the necessary authority to approve the account.

I control all the money.  I just make sure she always has enough cash for whatever. Any large purchases would be discussed anyways and I would have to taxi her around, so i might as well just pay for it too.

My parents think its appalling that I control all the money and always tell her to steal shit when Im not around.  Her parents know their daughter and are happy with the arrangement.

My wife loves not having the responsibility.  She just always magically has cash in her purse.  I wish she would take a more active role. I hate having to say no to her and i feel she should know everything, and thus know what and when its appropriate to ask.  Plus  it means I am the one to deal with all of the bullshit for paying every bill.  But to be fair she goes around  before hand and prepares everything like a year in advance, so I just drive to wherever hand them a paper and pay.

I guess its Ok. Its working well.

You may not believe it but I don't have a bank account, the last time I had one I emptied it of nearly half a million in the space of about three years. Now the missus has one and I just give her everything I make. Oddly enough though, anytime I want to take money out I just go and use her card, write her name and they hand it over without any questions asked.

No No No, wouldn't even consider it, no matter how much my ear's get pained 'which is frequent' I've been here in China 11 years, married 6 going on 7 and my wife doesn't even get to know how much in in the UK. I pay every thing here and in the UK, I mean every thing.

She does get an allowance each week, and I treat her very well.
