j89:

but i recently realized that  it hurts my feelings if someone judges me negatively !

j89. What if the people who are judging you hardly know you, are stupid, materialistic, ignorant and ill mannered? Would you still feel upset when someone like that looks down on you?

Caring what those who you perceive as being beneath you is a non-sequitur. If you possess a modicum of self-respect and confidence, such trivialities would not even enter into your conscious thought.

And those who judge you, are not worth enough to be cared about.

Stiggs:

For me at least, if you care about how people judge you then you need to care about the criteria they use to judge you by. If you don't their opinion is irrelevant.

If they feel you're nothing because you don't have the latest iphone for example, and your car is much cheaper than theirs, your house is worth less, your job not as prestigious etc and you get upset by this, then you probably share their values so their opinion is somewhat valid to you.

But, if you weren't at all influenced by materialistic things and face, if you judged people by their actions rather than what they own you would probably think their opinion is ridiculous. So, why worry about it?

If you do share their values though, then I guess you might take their opinion more seriously. I say it's a waste of time though because there will always be someone richer, smarter, prettier etc than you. If you let them dictate how you feel about yourself you will always be miserable and insecure.

Good question, tricky too. Short answer, nope.

Longer answer, depends on what you are, really.  In the context of China, a place where wrong becomes right, far too many mainlanders employ this "I shit wherever I like , I insult you to show how strong I am.  I don't care what you think of me". Coming from a twisted mind, the entire issue becomes twisted too. Stay the hell away from these freaks!

For the not-twisted ones but still care what other think of them, some good questions would be, why? What are your motives? What is it that you are lacking?.......

The need for external validation is something that can be overcome.

The diplomat is someone that can be humble when the need arises and be the world's biggest asshole when the situation calls for it.

As expats in China you are obligated to play the game as a diplomat.

The Chinese culture has put a huge price on the premise of guanxi and as a result people are easier to read than most...unlike the fascist dictatorship up north.

I don't give a shit about what people think of me...and it pleases some and pisses off more.....

This question is very relative to the situation you find yourself immersed in....like living in Faceland.

P.S. - yes Vicky cares more about this than most people....hence the post.

What my friends think of me yes, everyone else can think what they want.

Sinobear:

Is the enemy of your enemy your friend? If your friends think you're a jerk, do you "unfriend" them?

If Cubby wants to be your friend, and it thinks you're swell, is he automatically your friend?

Inquiring minds want to know!

At my age, people are more worried about what I think of them. I am very outspoken and honest with my thoughts. It gets me into trouble sometimes. But, I took on a mantra a long time ago that I would rather people know where they stand with with me in a completely honest manner, than to worry about what i might say behind their backs. My friends know they can trust me and words is golden. Those who don;t know me think I am a pompous ass. And, I like it that way.

people can earn my respect, which means i care what they think.
most often, Chinese coerce my concern with authority, but it is rarely earned.
i am forced to be concerned what people with power think of me, but it is not caring in the voluntary sense.

The only people whose opinion I care about are my friends and family who already know I am pretty much a "what you see is what you get and if you don't like it then f**k off" kind of person. Why would I worry about some strangers opinion of me when I don't know him/her and most likely will never see them again.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
