In China people are required to be able to produce ID on request. Do you carry your passport on you when you go out?
11 years 13 weeks ago in Visa & Legalities - China
I didn't use to. Would just keep a photocopy of it. But after that crackdown that happened, I started carrying it with me. Not such a big deal for me.
I personally don't for fear of loosing it - that would be a disaster. Plus the photo of me in there is just too damn fine to be lost. I do however carry photocopies of my passport and visa just for safety. Never been stopped on the street even during my visit to Beijing during the "crackdown" last year.
Nope, never carried it in over 2 years, never been asked to produce ID, heck I don't even carry a copy of it, (I really should), although I do keep a scan of it on my email homepage and on my PC at work and at home.
I carry my little FEC booklet with me instead. I figure it will work well enough to prove I'm legal, and it's (ever so slightly) less of a big deal if I happen to lose it.
I'm too afraid of loosing it. I hope that they never ask for it!
It stays at home or in a hotel safe that I am staying in at the time
Only in Guangzhou, and they stopped the black guys instead of me... wear a suit guys, and they may not check you out.
It is the Law here to carry it, and whether I like it or not, I do. The passport and the residence form from the local Police Station.
Because I do also have concerns about loosing it, or a pickpocket getting it, I have placed it into a plastic zip-lock bag, and into a fanny money belt which I do carry under my jacket in winter time, and under my shirt in summer. I do feel it is secured there.
And I was stopped twice and asked for it, and when produced it was thanked and told to carry on.

Actually I was advised by another guy to never carry it, because in case you are arrested, then you will at least need to go home and get your passport. Not sure if the logic works. This of course conflicts with the law, but so does a lot of things in China
cooter:
Or more likely, they'll make you call someone to go get it for you...better off not getting arrested in the first place :P
Hugh.G.Rection:
There are more laws in China than people, some say they have so many laws so they can always find some law a person is in breach of if they want to detain that person. For me I'll get on with my life and ignore those laws that have no real effect on me. If you were to obey every law you'd never leave your house.
unless am going to collect some cash in the bank send to me from abroad or travelling
I carry a photocopy of every page of my passport and a copy of my residency form, was asked for my passport in Wuhan and the photocopy was fine.
It's 9 years for me in china.... I never car passport ... Nobody's ever asked for it ( except hotels )
I only take mine with me to the bank and hotels ........
I once had my passport stolen from me, just before Chun Jie, in Dongguang.
So I don't normally carry it around with me.
I always carry my mobile with me and my Union Pay card(secured around my neck).
If I do get into any emergency or have a problem with anybody or anything, then I can telephone my friend and she can do what is necessary.
Having your passport lifted or lost causes too many problems especially during Spring Festival when the PSB is closed.
So I minimize the amount of times that I carry the passport around on me.
Yeah, it is useful to have it with you all the time but it's even better to not carry it out otherwise you risk to be stolen.
As Daffydd61 had been through this, you better learn the lesson before it might happen to you too.
I usually carry it on with me but from now on I will leave it home. Thanks Daffydd61. It's a good idea.
Another one with the photocopy
I didn't even have that, until last year. 3 years, and never been asked for it except at the bank and hotel. (and, I think, train station).
I did when the Beijing crackdown was on but now resort to photocopies.
I have carried it everywhere with me over the past 2 years even though I really would prefer not to.
I have never been asked or checked but Murphy's Law would kick in if I left it at home I am sure.
ScotsAlan:
Yes. I am afraid of Murphy's law too.
I always have mine on me. I feel naked without it to be honest.
I keep it in a small backpack, together with a camera and often a little netbook PC.
I always have a backpack with me. No matter where I go, I have my backpack. I work on the idea that to always have it means you never forget you have it. It's dangerous to take it sometimes and not at others.
I treat my passport like my phone. It's always with me.
Touch wood !!!!
I leave it in a safe place at home. I do take it with me when I travel outside the city. My school has not given me my FEC yet. They keep telling me they have to apply for it. Other than that I carry a color copy of my passport and resident Visa.
icnif77:
Schools prefer to keep your FEC in their drawer. Probably, School has your FEC already. You should get FEC some 2 weeks after you got your RP. I'm not sure, what is the reason, but if you break your Contract (because of the School's Contract violation), your old School must submit (in 30 days after your last working day) 'Certificate of FEC cancelation' to (new) SAFEA with Release letter. With Cancellation cert. your new School can get new FEC.
Tell School, you must show FEC with your passport at the Bank. If School wants FEC back, say 'FEC belongs to you, and it is necessary for ID, together with your passport!'.
I had a pocket sewn into all of my bras -- on the left cup. I keep the passport there. If the cops want it, they can go fish it out. I keep my credit cards in a similar pocket on the right cup.
icnif77:
So, 'cop can see/fish' L one, and 'banker can view' R one? How can you view both in the same time?
A: 'Cop and banker must come together for check-in!'
ScotsAlan:
Impressive that you can do that without a VPL.... visible passport line lol.
Yes I do because I drive a car in China, MUST have it... But for the last 5 years no one in Shenzhen has ever asked, wanted or even done any kind of Check request on my passport.. But it's with me if they need it. I wish they'd come out with: "Working Resident Permit Hukou ID Cards" that can be scanned and give them all details rather then use our passport.
I keep photos of my passport's first page, visas, work and residents permits, Chinese and US drivers licenses in my phone and on my server at work which I can access remotely. Don't carry them unless I am traveling and have had no issues. I even checked into hotels, bought train tickets, etc. this way.
No, too worried about losing it. They can follow me home and have a look at it there if the want to
