I encountered quite an aggressive beggar on the subway this morning. He grabbed my arms for a good 5 seconds making me feel extremely uncomfortable. I had to walk away to a different carriage to get away from him. I always hate these situations because I feel really guilty, but at the same time I don't feel safe taking out my money on the subway for all to see. Do you ever give money to beggars here in China?
no. I use my 'leave me alone' face - quite effective. If a stranger did hold on to me like that, i use my 'leave me alone' voice.
sorrel:
EDIT: unfortuatly you are unlikely to get any help from locals if this happens. More likely you will end up online in photo's or China's YouTube
No, and, as I am quite a big and scary looking chap they tend to leave me be.
It does annoy the hell out of me that they make a beeline for anyone looking foreign though.
No.
(and I often see them having a surprising amount of cash in they collection tray, enough a days worth of food)
I give money to buskers, but rarely beggers. There is a lady i've seen around my local area who I give money to but that's partly because she never asks for it, I just see her sleeping in the street and she always makes such an effort to look nice, it kind of breaks my heart. I once saw a fella stroll down the street, then lie on the floor and reach out his hand pathetically like he was crippled. I was tempted to give him money just for making me laugh.
There are so many fake and professional beggars on the street, when they ask for money, better just give them the kiss-off. This phenomenon has led to an increasingly damage and harmful influence, it should get the government's attention and care of the whole society.
no enough money to face so many beggars in China. sometimes they are well organized by some beggar leader or group.
They always make me feel guilty, I try not to, but sometimes I can't help it...
I used to, then my girl friend stopped me. When I went to Thailand I read that beggars work for gangs and they get kids from Cambodia and don't feed them all day to make them cry. I imagine China is no different. There still are exceptions, one time I gave a 100 to an old woman that recently had her eye removed and she wasn't begging. Security guards were trying to move her. I don't like the security guards.
