Q: Do you ever sit and wonder how many of these students go abroad?

So a student cheats on his test...and instead of getting a 0 the school rules that he can get a 60% max...

So basically they're rewarding him for cheating by giving him a score high enough to let him get placed in a high school next year.

Here's the kicker, his so-called "severe punishment" is security detail at the gate when students leave.

So the punishment for cheating is "losing face" for a few short minutes?
Wow.

Do you ever sit and wonder how many of these students go abroad?

Insightful and thought provoking.

As a whole, mainlanders are exclusively obsessed with food and sex. The mass consciousness is completely disconnected from higher pursuits, primarily in the spiritual areas. This is critical because the spiritual is where one seeks higher truths, where integrity, honesty, and other virtues are held as important.

China mainlanders at large can only see lust, food, i.e. basic animal instincts.  Actually, other animals don't exhibit mainlanders' level of obsession with food and sex. Mainlanders' level is a pervert's level. Just use their search engine to search anything an d see how many sex ads pop up!

This makes it virtually impossible for mainlanders to have integrity of any kind, since they don't seek higher truths. Their only 'truths' are food, sex, money and face.

Their care is limited to immediate family members, anyone else is for use, expendable, this makes them extremely cruel and selfish. Social responsibility does not exist within China's mass consciousnes.

You tell me, how can you have honesty, openness, manners, and  basic human decency in this so-called society, which in truth, is a thieves' den.

[edited]This brings us to another nasty, cunning trait of mainlanders' psyche, the unwillingness to put in hard work, even a kid knows that stealing is a 'short cut'. The mass consciousness is filled with this little-best is none-effort- big return mindset. In itself, this is efficient working but when you put in the disconnection from spiritual awareness attained through spiritual quests, you end up with thieves thinking about thefts even when dreaming, how to grab food, sex, money and face through stealing, in one form or another.

he just got punished that he was caught, not for the cheating itself.

Cheating is permitted, getting caught is losing face for everyone.

yes, most schools or universities do not let any student fail the tests even if he doesnt even take the test. It is for graduation statistics... hey look we have 99% of students that graduate with an A+, our teachers are so great; now please throw the money into our face
.

one more word: Interegrity in china LOL!! its like two different worlds clashing

Zethe:

Wow I didn't consider the first point you made about being caught.
Also, you made me lol

In China, if you aren't naturally smart... you got to either:

- Cheat

- have guanxi

- or give the teacher special favors

...

Hard work doesn't seem to be an option here.

There was a thing in the media a few years ago. I don't remember all the details but basically a school decided to enforce anti cheating measures and the move was met with outrage from the students and their parents.

Their argument was, 'it's not fair if you don't let us cheat'.

It makes my brain hurt trying to figure out that logic but I assume they mean that since every other kid in the country was cheating on that exam, they were being unfairly disadvantaged because they couldn't cheat.

Well..Wherever "clever" is deemed as a sign of intelligence..It would logically follow that cheating is a sign of "intelligence".

All of the ones with rich parents. The question is how long will they survive in the west. Most won't. We also won't hear about the ones who come back. Either that or you will hear some story about how bad the kid was treated when it broke a law in the west so the family can save face.

Zethe:

Interesting...so THAT'S where the stories of so-called "Chinese mistreatment" in the "evil west" come from.

They end up ranting on the internet because no Western girl wants them despite all their money. No social skills and a sense of entitlement based on rather shaky facts, no wonder they can't get laid.

Randomguy
This reminds me of a guy I went to college with named James Han.
He was always posting immature comments about what he's about to do next with his "foreign girl", then getting publicly dumped on that very same post..
Then he would spend the next few weeks saying things like, "She/they can't appreciate my greatness" before making some kind of racist comment.

It kept going like that in cycles until he finished college and had to leave.

The main point he always tried to make was it was everyone else's fault.

I helped run a program with Chinese exchange students in my university and 99% of them were planning on going back/went back to China after graduating. Their American degrees are  just so they can get better positions in China or better run their parents' companies in China... In my university, you can regularly see Chinese students sitting together in the back of the lecture hall and whispering answers/passing sheets of paper during exams.

Zethe:

Interesting insight, but if they had put in real effort they would have landed a much better paying and less stressful job abroad.

The idea that having Western degrees grant better positions to Chinese returnees is not true anymore. Lots of returnees stuck in jobs that pay 6k a month. Nowadays, the only thing that matters is guanxi.

loudvillager:

Hi Randomguy: You're completely right about that. I've met a couple of returnees who are fantastic people. Many of them fully deserve to stay in the west and would be a tremendous asset. Advanced degrees in economics, computer science and can talk for hours about world affairs etc. As you'll know from working in any Chinese workplace, you go in at the bottom of the hierarchy and advancement is based on longevity of service+guanxi rather than genuine merit or professional competence. Lots of these guys and girls just work low paying, low level clerical type jobs while their boss who was probably wielding a little red book and denouncing bourgeois capitalist roaders during his university years, sits in the office with a tea set looking at photos of people's dinner on wechat. The only hope these people have to even approach a meagre portion of the investment which their families made into their education is to sell a few Australian biscuits and milk powder while trying to introduce as many foreigners they can find to a school in return for a one off commission. What a waste of human talent!

What the heck, I say let 'em cheat. It's their way and who am I to question their ways. maybe they like living in unsanitary conditions for instance , or perhaps to them spray-paint graffiti in public places really is an art form...   anyway,,, back to the cheating, as I said, I'm not going to lose sleep over trying to stop them, I like for them to pass exams and then when they are asked simple questions to watch them lose face by not being able to provide even a basic answer.  Heck, with some of the students I practically encourage them to try to cheat. I egg them on u could say.  I even go so far as to bait them into doing so, some have claimed that I am so good at baiting that I could be considered Master level!

Stiggs:

I gave up caring about the cheating pretty quickly. It's not like anything we say or do to dissuade it makes any difference anyway.

Yeah, the kid will get straight A results all through school and the parents will brag about how clever their pampered offspring are .. until they get to university in whichever foreign country and the kid can't understand anything being said in class, or gets caught copying someone else's essay or something.

It's at that point that I'd love to believe they think back to the time they had a foreign teacher (me) getting pissed off after trying in vain to convince them cheating through school isn't clever, it's just cheating.

I doubt they they'd reflect much on their own actions though, they'd probably just think they're being picked on because they're Chinese.

If you have no ethics in China, you can cash in on exams, get the parents' money in exchange for better grades. I used to do this all the time years ago when I was teaching.

Unfortunately, many will go overseas to our universities.

And, even worse, will be able to find people willing to take their money and do their assignments for them (at least to a basic level) so they qualify for their degree.

Our unis need to take a LOT more action to stop this charade from continuing...

Chinese still think that money solves all problems... they need to be smacked down and shown that it doesn't!

dom87:

unfortunately, money does solve almost all problems. Just if you have plenty of it.

US system sucks that's why the universities have to take their money, otherwise they are completly broke

If you have enough money, why obtain a degree in the first place...

A:That would be an awful experience. I would call your embassy asap, they might be able to suggest something or give you a temporary replacement or something. I'm sure they would have seen this before. You may also need something from the PSB to say that you still have a valid visa in order to leave the country. Do you at least have a copy of your visa and passport front page, or can you get one?  If you have been working here your employer would probably have copies. In the mean time, turn the place upside down trying to find your passport.Good luck mate.   -- Stiggs
