Q: Do you get ridiculed when you get sick?

Today was freakin' hard to handle!

Once a year or so I get arthritis which renders me unable to walk well as it attacks my ankles. Today my Chinese in-laws told me it was all my fault and I deserved to be in pain. As well as that the doctor called me cheap because I would noit stay in the hospital for the recommended 7 days. All I wanted was some pain killers which usually do the trick. I was told they will sell me the cheapest medicine because I was so cheap!

I was ready to blow a gasket!!!!

In my experience I have noticed that if a Chinese person gets sick they are told to rest and not work so hard..........F#CK me!!!

Rest? I love that. Phone calls and messages every five minutes asking you if you are getting any rest.

You can order Aleve (NSAIDs) on Taobao..they should suit your purposes.

It certainly isn't the people sneezing and not washing hands that are at fault.

For some reason you are at fault for getting sick. I hate this too. My wife and mother in law will continue asking how did you get sick, why are you sick etc. .... and I just want to be left alone when I am sick, or maybe lay in bed with a laptop watching a movie with the wife, but I certainly don't want the MIL to burst in every other second to tell me how stupid I am for getting sick and that she has found some crap to rub on my dangly-bits to cure everything in no time

I am glad that we no have MIL in our home, coz then i will definitely jump out of window...

A couple of ideas on that. Instead of jumping out of the window, wait until the MIL has filled your apartment with sufficient amounts of tea. Then toss the milbag out. this is provided you live higher than 2nd floor, otherwise you will never hear the end of it.

(note: I do actually not encourage to defenstrate people or anything for that matter)

The only thing that exceeds the irrationality of Chinese people's ideas about health is their certainty in their own wisdom.

This afternoon I had a conversation with one of my students about the very mild acne on her face.

She said she had been to the university's doctor, who told her that because she was getting up too late in the mornings there was a fire in her belly that was causing her spots.

I said "The other possibility is that you're a 20-year-old girl -- Most young people get spots at some time or other because of androgens (hormones) -- The condition will disappear naturally before your mid-20s, regardless of what time you get out of bed."

I should've known better than to question ancient Chinese wisdom. Australia only has 200 years of recorded history after all, so obviously we don't know shit.

Robk:

lol - If she drinks warm water and gets plenty of rest then she will be cured of that fire in the belly...

Chinese... they love to use western medicine but hate to admit it. Because that would be like admitting we may know more than they do, while they steal our designs.products and make cheaper versions... that aspect of Chinese drives me mad.

Yeah like being honest with themselves...they don't like chinese culture either. Look at the things that are popular right now: High-rise Apartments, Mobile Phones, Luxury Cars, Designer Clothes, Villas etc. Those are all things which are not in any way traditionally Chinese.

The best piece of wisdom I know is don't listen to what people say, watch what they do.

yeah, I have yesterday also big argument about " fire in the belly" or "shan huo" mystery with my wife. : ydafak you always say something bad about chinese doctors, wwhat is wrong with you and this constant BS ? For many sicks only TCM is working, while western medicine solve problem, but also "delete health" as side effect ...

my reply : what kind of medicine did help your mom ? why almost every chinese is buying western medicine to save their life ? why I import medical devices to china ? Why they leave china in hundreds daily ?

Not only do you have to go through that at the hospital... let's not forget:

- the cold uncaring nurses (and doctors sometimes)

- the smudged up walls with dirt and in some cases blood on them

- the random Chinese person listening in on the doctor speaking and checking on you

- the random doctor trying to cheat you to up the bill (actually they tried that one on you)

- everyone trying to give you the most idiotic advice you ever heard in your life...

I beg you not to take this the wrong way but I'm going to be very direct: why the hell did you marry to this type of Chinese wife/family, and how the hell do you let them lecturing you?

Wanna know why this would never happen to me? Because I checked my wife wasn't buying idiotic propaganda slash retarded traditions slash superstitions BEFORE I married her, and because the in-laws are perfectly conscious should we have one single talk resembling what you described, they would break an gigantic dam of uninterrupted hours of common sense talk they can't answer to.

No, I won't drink warm water and YOU should keep it for washing the dish. No, I won't take this TCM because the best I can hope from it is to be a placebo. Yes, I will rest because No, you're not going to ask me every five minutes because YES, I don't live with you. And lastly, Never will I set a foot in a goddamn Chinese "hospital". Should I need surgery or anything of this type, I shall carried to Hong Kong or die trying because the best you can get from a mainland "hospital" is to go one step further at the cost of two steps back later on your way to health.

That's the kind of alpha male attitude that guarantees you an approximate rate of zero BCD and zero people daring to ridicule you ever.

I'm nearly 7 feet tall, and I exert my dominance every day in China. You're kidding yourself if you think acting like this is the perfect way to avoid BCDs.

It's the #1 reason I had BCDs. I don't take shit from anyone, and I refuse to buy into the superstition, or even allow it to be used in my presence. It caused me a lot of trouble.

Oh, yes... you must be from Hunan, right?

Well, here's a couple of stories.

1) I got sick in Hubei when my ex's mother tried to get rid of me by feeding me pesticide-flavored noodles. I watched as she looked at me in horror as I ate, as if her conscience was bothering her big time. She was shaking, looking at me like she knew she was about to go to jail.

Her daughter felt like I couldn't take care of myself, and it made her second-guess our relationship. Good, because I already wanted out before I met her family. But the thing is, apparently I'm "immature" and "can't take care of myself" while vomiting blood, weak as hell, etc.

2) When I was with my wife, then girlfriend, I got sick to the point where I slept for almost 7 days. Everyone was talking about how immature I am, and how I can't take care of myself. Seriously? I've only been sicker than that once in my ENTIRE life, and that was after being poisoned by #1. All of her friends encouraged her to walk out on me, "Look at him! He can't take care of himself!"

Really? Everyone ridicules me when I'm sick in China. It's retarded.
