Q: Do you get special treatment at the clubs because you are a foreigner?

I know in smaller cities you do, because basically you are a walking marketing campaign for them. Chinese think that going to the same places as foreigners makes them gain face or status.

Basically, they will sometimes give free beer or those fruit assortments and try to move you to a table near the front where everyone will see us. Then they also but a guard right beside us... I think half because they are afraid we will cause trouble and half because they are afraid others will try to cause trouble with us.

Usually they let us walk through the metal detector without checking us, even if the alarm goes off but the guy behind us will get checked. They also have a host at our table to pour our drinks and whatever...

I notice in larger cities it generally isn't like this unless you are in a very expensive club. Foreigners are basically treated the same as all the other patrons.

So how is it like in your city? And do you like in a smaller or larger city?

Sure. I live in a second tier city in Fujian and when I go into a club I get asked to take shots with the VIPs and play dice. No big deal for me it can be fun but when I get bored I walk away. At the last place I lived it happened everywhere had some real craziness go down. As for the big cities yeah nothing out of the norm happens just because I'm a foreigner.

Yeah, I get some pretty special treatment at the clubs in China, all because I'm a foreigner. I'm walking down the street and suddenly cops come out of nowhere and club me within an inch of my life while I'm on the ground yelling, "THUG LIFE!", on repeat until I lose consciousness.

Life's hard in the herd, son. *pours a glass of milk*

Stop wearing hoodies with the hood pulled all the way up! You are probably giving off too much "hood" vibe even without the hood pulled up!

No clubs or bars to speak of in my little city.  Everyone here either just gets smashed at the restaurant, at home, or in a KTV room.  In neighboring Ningbo, there's no special treatment for foreigners.  This is based on my statistically insignificant sample size of 1; i.e. the one time I went to a Chinese club....god, what an awful experience.

When I first came to China and was living in Wuhan, I never paid for a drink in a club once. Any bar would just take us to a table and give us a dozen beers and a bottle of whiskey and tea.

Other cities, would just get tables to show us off and have drunk dudes want to drink with us.

Luckily in larger cities where I am, everyone just leaves us alone.  Not special at all. Id buy my own bottles forever if it meant not being stared at all night.

If they can't take the opportunity to stare in the club, they'll still catch up with you at the urinals!

Wuhan and Changsha almost turned me into a spree killer. Thankfully, other cities saved me. Like Guangzhou, etc.

Yeah, everywhere, not just clubs. In my city whenever I go to a new place (restaurant, bar, club, KTV, or even little mom and pop shops) they'll give me free stuff. When me and my business partner are bored, we'll park on a random street, start walking, and make a bet to see how long it takes for someone to grab me and insist that I eat and drink with them. The shortest time was a minute 43 seconds, the longest was 6 minutes 19 seconds. And because my business partner is with me and can speak English, they will pay for him too.. The only time I have ever spent money on food or beer was the supermarket. EVERY day at least 2 people will ask me to eat and drink with them, so always eat and drink for free. I will definitely miss that when I leave China lol

Well, do have other stories of foreigners getting no-so-special-treatment because they are foreigners. Like one time a foreign buddy of mine started dancing with a girl. Then some disgruntled Chinese guy comes up and says the foreign guy is dancing with his girl friend.

My buddy asked if she was his girl friend and she said she was not. Anyway, he later went back to his table (my buddy) with some other foreigners and continued to exchange insults and shouts at the group with the Chinese guy.

They decided to call it a night and leave the club, when a swarm of Chinese guys (because they can't just fight one on one) decided to jump them as they were leaving. There was a fight and people got hurt... but the bouncers grabbed some of the foreign guys and stopped them from helping their already outnumbered buddies getting pummeled. They held back the foreigners and tossed them out. Turns out my buddy knew the owner... who apologized profusely but it seems like the entire place was against them.

Heard this kind of story quite a few times. If you get in a tussle with a local Chinese guy... expect him to be on his phone the next second calling up 50 eager Chinese guys to take on the single or small group of foreigners.

mike695ca:

This story makes me love Guangzhou even more. Any fight i have had with Chinese have been 2 against me max. No one has jumped in or even cared it was laowai vs Chinese. I think this is because in a Cantonese place they have less of an us vs them atitude. As well as the Cantonese hating all other Chinese and prefering foreigners be here over them.

I'm not much into night life, but I know other FT's in my little city have lots of free invitations to be seen in people's clubs.
I probably miss plenty of opportunities for free food and drink by not responding delightedly to the "Hooolau!" shouted at me. Time spent with locals is free time wasted, and I can buy my own food and drink. Choosing is much better than having to consume what is given to me...
