Q: Do you have a Chinese dictator boss?

The Dictator

♦ Best case: The dictator communicates in a direct, authoritative style, but is actually open to input.

♦ Worst case: The dictator genuinely believes that he has all the answers and expects everything to be done his way.

♦ Possible strategies: Acknowledge the value of your manager's ideas and approaches. Don't present your own opinions in a confrontational manner. Instead, ask your manager if she is open to hearing a suggestion or considering some different options. When employees take a very direct approach, these managers often view it as the beginning of an argument, so try using questions to keep your manager from getting defensive. Start your sentences with "do you think we might" or "could we consider" instead of "we should" or "we have to".

♦ What you should never do: Never tell dictatorial managers that they "can't" do something. That makes them very angry.

We have a boss like this. How do you work around a boss like this? We've had 14 teachers leave due to this boss.

My present boss/owner of Public - Private school told me (after I asked her to see her 'laowai hire authorization'):

''Trust me! If you won't trust me, you can't work at my School!''

I was thinking, how can you trust somebody who you've never met in real life and you know only through online chat ....?

As am completing the Contract at her School and all shenanigans I had, she just wanted me to relax   .... similar like dentist say to a patient on the chair: 'RELAX!'

.... with the surgical dagger in her/his hand ...

I ink the Contract after she sent me ''laowai hire certificate's file'' and I am finishing the Contract, because I am never relaxed when dealing with China-men&women.

My Chinese dentist and all employees at Jingzhou Dental Clinic are different story, i.e. 100% opposite! This is the 'State-of-the-Art' Clinic!

There's huge demand for competent foreign teachers and a short supply. Many people all over the world will tell you that if you can't get a job in your home country it's because you didn't take the right courses or you lack the right skills. When I read blogs from my home country which has been rooted by neoliberalism and free trading agreements signed between asset stripping kleptocrats from China and local banksters landbanking residential properties while allowing criminals from China to come in, buy a house and leave it vacant, I can see that some people are ripe for colonization and are stuck with an obsolete perspective of how the world really works.

These bosses you're describing above tend to lack any skills. I am sure he wouldn't be able to change a tyre on a car or even cook a meal. Don't feed into their delusions or try to validate their existence. Leave them for the vast numbers of desperate Chinese who have virtually no hope in finding a fulfilling vocation and go to find a civilized employer. There are a few places in this country where the managers have managed to surmount the proverbial bell curve. As a proportion of the total number of companies the percentage is very low, but this is a country of 1.35 billion people. They're few and far between, but they're out there and the demand for foreign teachers will work in your favour.

This is why civilized countries have welfare systems. It's better to give useless people some free money and let them watch TV, take drugs and call into radio stations ranting about the local government than to have them in the marketplace degrading the institutions of the country and threatening the financial position of families. If he's really driven to get some extra money on top of his welfare he can go out on the streets and sell some white powder. Hopefully he'll get caught and take a lump of lead through his temple.

It's the best place to start thinning out the herd. I'm currently working and have to receive my money through such an intermediary. Cutting out the middle man sounds good to me because I do all the work, he fucks up, but he gets the cash first and then pays me.

"Start your sentences with "do you think we might" or "could we consider" instead of "we should" or "we have to"

Eg - do you think all those staff left because you're an incompetent, antagonistic, egocentric moron?

Could we consider replacing you with someone with an IQ higher than a rock?

As an ESL teacher, I know that I hold the winning hand. Therefore, I do not fear these kinds of people. China is having a horrible time trying to get foreign teachers to come here. That is one reason for the significant increase in salaries of ESL teachers this past year. I am no dictator as a teacher either. But, I will speak my mind and let my opinions be known to any and all people. I fully understand the need for rules, contracts and a structure for the business. I have also worked in China long enough to understand the way they run their businesses and the structure of command. But, come at me with a Napleon complex and we will butt heads. There are far too many good paying jobs in this country for me to tolerate such people. I have never had to quit a position before, nor have I been asked to leave. We usually come to agreements that make us both happy. Perhaps I have been fortunate to have understanding employers and that we have been able to work through any problems.

A:  It depends on which part of the lake region you want to visit. Most start from NanChang, the shortest distance to the lake is about 30km  and 186km to the government run wetland park, marked by the hut shape symbol on the upper right corner of the map below

October is too early to see the migratory Siberian cranes. November onwards is better, their number peaking in between December and January. The dry season lasts from Sept to April.

Here are some photos taken by a retired local during his self-drive tour of Poyang Lake, dating Oct. 17, 2016.
