Q: Do you have food problem here?

Problem 1:I have been influenced by westerners.I now find black digest line in shrimp, fish skin, fish head, pig feet, chicken claw, and anything cooked with bones are disgusting.
Do you have that food problem here?
Problem 2:

Be hungry al the time, become a Buddist vegetarian, do not eat bread, rice or drink cola, eat like western skinny woman. This will make your derriere better. I have no problem, nothing is good to eat, at least there is peanut butter.

i try not to worry about every little thing, people have been eating plants and animals since the beginning of time.  Just be reasonably careful and choosy about things, how they are cooked, where you buy them, etc.  Just a decent dose of commonsense and awareness should keep you safe and healthy.  Try to enjoy your food and if you like fish, shrimp, and beef, then have some!  Always eat your veggies and fruits!  ok i will stop.

Problem 1: I don't eat shrimp in China unless I cook them myself, and then there will be no black string.

Problem 2: I think vegetarianism in China is a real challenge. So few restaurants can cook green vegetables without a bit of meat. People eating babies is at least not something you se everywhere. Rather than this being a concern about eating, you should think about what society breads such people. (I could imagine it is a hoax, but in China, there are plenty sick people)

There is nothing wrong with eating animals, people have been eating animals and their various parts for thousands of years now. It's natural. Some people don't like chicken feet, fish heads etc but that's their own preference.

Eating aborted babies is a different thing altogether, and should not be confused with eating an animal. If you eat a steak, some bacon or god forbid a chicken foot you're not a cannibal. If you eat baby you are.

Have you tried eggs cooked in young boys urine? The boys get nothing for their urine, this is wrong, prime ingredient. I would not pee unless I was first paid.

Cook yourself. You will know what goes into your cooking. It's cheaper and more nutritious. I keep off frogs, they remind me of unborn babies.

apart from eating in restaurants only on occasion - i avoid street food  - i cook for myself as often as i can.

I was taught to cook in my teens and have always used books and the internet to widen my range.

i also pay close attention to my ingredients, keeping food seasonal , freshness and quality in mind, and was taught how to use any left-over food to create nutritious meals - nothing is wasted.

food is always bought with the number if different ways it can be cooked in mind.

before any of you mock about growing up in a poor family, that was not the case: thrift and meal planning were the order of the day and these habits have stood me well.

true.

When i asked about a place to repair my boots, i was mocked for my thriftiness by local friends:

Friend "Why not buy a new pair of boots? You are rich."

me "do you know a place that sells Italian leather boots?"

many brand conscious locals mistake frugality for poverty. They can't believe i don't own an iPhone - I don't need one.

It is laughable how people project their own life needs on others

I cook myself, too. My city is 'pig capital'.....They sell beef only on Fridays mornings, before 10am. I wanted to make some meatballs last week, but no butcher has meat grinder. One butcher offered me to cut meat with knife, when I show&tell her, what I want.

And in the same time, I need a dentist. Soon, I'll use straw instead kuaizi.

I'm on the pasta and rice, with veggi. Mon, Wed, Fri and Sun = spaghetti; Tue, Thu and Sat = rice.

Problem? A bit, I think!

Can you post a link Vicky?

Your wechat friends eat aborted babies?

I can only assume the evil people are Chinese.

You need to report this to the police.

My problem with food here are the weekly scandals, even salt or rice are not reliable. Meat, looking how it's handled from the live animal to the butcher shop, I don't want to even look at it. Not removing bones or keeping digestive tracks in shrimps or fishes is a minor issue in comparison.

Being vegetarian ? I'm, and I don't feel hungry all the time, I've enough energy to run 45km/week and do all my transit by bike. I even manage to have a bit of belly fat that just refuse to go. I eat eggs and some dairy products occasionally (like ice-creams those days). We cook our stuffs at home, simple things with simple ingredients. My wife eats some meat, but she's kind enough to mix-it up with what I eat.

Victoria1987:

I usually cook myself now and I will grow my own veggies to eat without any chemicals.Just eat outside occasionally in chain restaurants like:Pizza huts, subway,Mc Donalds,KFC,burger king, newyork pizza, bluefrog.shanghai brewery and green kitchen sometimes. But I tried to not eat in some small tinny resturants in the street. The black line in the shirmp is truly dusgusting...I am not gonna eat the shit inside.

DrMonkey:

To grow your own veggies, you need space for that. To have enough veggies for your own consumption, you need a garden, not a balcony. Count 1 to 2 hours of work everyday for the garden. No chemicals, so you will remove the bad weed and control insects and other freeloaders by hand. For fertilizer, the best I know is making your own compost and horse poop... And in winter, you will have a supply problem, unless you have a greenhouse. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's a serious commitment. I plan to do so when I will move abroad next year, I will be working from home.

Most moral vegetarians shun meat because they realize that animals can feel pain too; that they are living, breathing, thinking, feeling creatures. It's funny how this photoset caused you to retreat into moral vegetarianism not out of compassion for animals, but by demonstrating that people have meat, too... I'd be disappointed in your humanity, but This Is China!

I saw those same foetus eating photos more than 15 years ago. They were presented as a popular fad among Japanese, and the story was a hatchet job against Japs. I've also seen the exact same photos used last year to promote horror stories about Chinese hospitals, which were allegedly forcing abortions to provide meat for this new health fad. Sinobear's link presents it as Taiwanese now. Although it could be from anywhere, my instinct tells me these photos came from China, and the guy was some zombie-idiot who believed a miracle-cure story a TCM 'doctor' told him.

It's one set of old photos of a guy doing some horrible cannibalism, and people seem to be fascinated by it. They're potent stuff, so when your gut gets turned upside down by the imagery, the story tells you who to hate, be they Japanese, Taiwanese, or doctors in Chinese hospitals. Keep in mind that the foetus was already dead; it doesn't alleviate the revulsion, but it should matter a great deal. There are plenty of stillborns and late-term abortions to provide for that single meal/photoshoot.

Cannibalism happened in the past, it was one of Mao Zedong's great selling points of his brave new world: No cannibalism anymore. That was probably before the famine in the Great Leap Forward...
Anyway, these cannibalism photos are like the muslim beheading videos. They are meant to shock you, to generate hatred. If you let them achieve their goal of shocking you and creating the outrage they want, IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. So, best thing to do is ignore it.

coineineagh:

Oh, and with regards to the food thing: I'm getting used to having to eat meat with skin & bones still attached. In fact, it's among the more palatable dishes on the table, in between all the organ meats, face meats, feet, and sliced pork fat. I get diarrhoea every week, but no discernable pattern. I swear i got it from a *watermelon* last week. Go figure...

I certainly have a problem with food here. Most of it consists of the same, or almost the same ingredients which are smothered in soy, garlic, ginger etc. Everything tastes the same. On two occasions I have known Chinese women say they do not like the way I cook food and could not identify what the meat was. One was roast chicken and the other was steak prepared with just a sprinkle of salt, They did not recognise the true taste of either chicken or beef despite these being staple meats here. I have been to only two out of many restaurants that I would recommend for the quality of their food, the rest have been indistinguishable from each other in terms of taste. I always enjoyed Chinese food back home but I have been here long enough now that if I never eat another "real" Chinese dish it would not bother me. Chinese food has acquired the reputation of being one of the great foods of the world  but in my part of China it is mostly crap. Do I have a problem with it, you bet.
