Q: Do you need a VPN to surf internet freely in China?

I have 2M internet and the router is 300mbps, but it constantly says the server can't be found. I feel like the connection and/or speed is the not the problem. Skype works perfectly well at all times and that alone requires a strong internet connection for video chats. Please let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas as to what the problem may be.

For sites like Facebook and Youtube you will need a VPN because they are blocked in China

I usually use expressvpn.com, it cost like 12-13 dollars a month. But I know some english teachers and they somehow find some free ones online but those are not constant.

I use Astrill - about $6 to $7 a month. You can't live without a VPN if you want to access some sites. Sometimes I can operate without the VPN and it is actually a bit quicker.
Your problem with your computer giving that message is definitely blocking.

A VPN is needed for un-monitored un-blocked websurfing in China.  There are lots out there, but advertising the names of the services only allows the powers that be to find them and block them that much quicker.

Are you serious? I mean, really? You've never heard of the great firewall? You actually think that magically these sites just aren't coming up because of a glitch?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
