Rarely in my experience. They use the meter all the time, unless it is a flat rate that is to a specific place like an airport.

This morning, I check out of the Hotel in Nanjing. I asked receptionist for taxi.

Hotel's employee showed me way outside, and direct me toward private car. I felt save, because Hotel employee sit me in the car. There was no meter or any taxi sign on the car.

I called my Chinese helper, and she said proper price for the distance is 30 Rmb. Driver of the car requested 60 Rmb. I refuse to pay! I gave driver 30 Rmb, and say: 'Police!'

Next time similar thing happened, I will not pay anything! I refused to pay!

My Chinese helper covered the balance of 30 Rmb to a private car driver.

She explained to me, Hotel employee put me in the private car, and price for the ride is double.

I felt insulted, but my Chinese coworkers don't think that was really big problem.

I will test my next taxi ride! I will simply refuse to pay for the ride! I want to see what will happened!

Recently, all the time. Especially at the airport, train station, and in Sanlitun, Gongti, or any crowded place late at night. There are less and less taxis, and more and more people can afford to take them all the time, so, and it's no surprise from the greedy bastards who aren't allowed to use fake meters anymore, licensed taxis start going "black" as well. 80 yuan being the minimum price for a 3km ride. Fuck those guys. They seriously infuriate me. No wonder I'm now angry all the time.

50%-50%.

If I am in places like Guomao or Sanlitun or the Airport, they dont want to use the meter, so i just get out. In areas with fewer foreigners they use the meter no problem.

I usually encounter them when it's late in the night or when it's rush hour.

If it's a place I'm used to going, then I just tell them the price I usually pay and it's up to them if they want to take me or not.

All the time, but its an easy fix. Usually the doors not locked, they like to slowly drive up and roll down the window and ask where your going.  Trick here is to get in as quick as you can. Once your in and the seatbelt is on they cant argue as hard not to use the meter.

If they are still giving you trouble, just refuse 3 or 4 times ( if you cant speak Chinese just point to the meter and look angry) .  If they are really stubborn, and this rarely happens, say ok, take out your phone, start looking at is ID card thingy like you magically learned how to read Chinese and start calling a number. Any number will do,  they should start cussing you out under there breath and drive. If all else fails, really call the company. They must take you by meter, so fight back! and stop letting them rip you off!  Whats better? 5 minutes arguing with the dude or paying double the price?? On principle alone i'll pick the argument every time

Yes, if they do not run the meter, you are not required to pay in Suzhou.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
