Q: Do you see yourself in China 5 years from now?

Me no, because of the rising xenophobia, worsening pollution and growing cost of living.

I might still come for business from time to time, but not living here full time.

No.

Then again, with the rate that my health has been deteriorating I don't see myself anywhere 5 years from now.

I will stop being in China permanently in a few months. I will come every year for work and to visit the family in law.

Why... Because I think I can get a better education system, environment (pollution and society) and healthcare for my kids back home. Cost of living is higher back home for common goods, but at equivalent standard, accommodation, education and health are more expansive in China. I hope I'm not into delusion about how things are back home...

We gave up on NZ, it would be more of a gambling than just an expensive administrative formality (no job in NZ + less than 140 immigration points). There's a catch 22 : to get a job, you need to be there, but to be there you need a job. And no, tourist visa does not allow job interviews (well, at least in theory). Back home, I keep my current job, formalities are minimal for my wife. No hard feelings, I still think Kiwis are awesome, but maybe an other time ^^

No, for same reason as Dr.Monkey.

My time will end in 2 years. I got now 2 years rent contract, I will settle good deal with employer for this next 2 years, with open option for continue on crazy expat package only, but when son reach 6 years, I want him go to primary school back in Czech. School and healthcare for kids until 18 or till he study is still for free or minimum charge, with better service and something China can not beat now.  I know, all other thing are bit expensive, but we can work on it. I can get 2 jobs back home, not here ...

No. Not really feasible but even if it was I wouldn't. Why give up better healthcare, free education, cheaper housing, and less pollution to live here?

Nope, this country isn't worth the risk of cancer. When my current contract is up, I'm outta here. I want to come back and tour Inner Mongolia-ningxia-gansu-qinghai, but I will only be in Chinaas a tourist after this.

ironman510:

If you don't mind me asking, which city are you in? Cancer is easier to get 3 different ways, 1. Its in your family blood. 2. You're not in good health or have bad long term habits. or 3. You took a radiation shower. China won't give you cancer if you are a healthy adult, well if you're working by a chemical plant that's a different story. I took a 1 year course on Cancer research back in my Uni days.

Of course not. You're fine, as long as you change some of your habits, like breathing.

Faaaaaaaaaaaak

Just now my wife called me back. She went with our son to smaller hospital, not the no.1 or no.3 or whatever, the empty one, not bilions people at once.

In our son kindergarden is time to time the feet-hand-mouth desease coming. at saturday he got fevers, but sunday was fine, yesterday he started some rash on lip corner. today it turned to be just herpes from that fever, but my wife want to be sure it is not nothing else. So when they arrived , what happen ?

WE WILL NOT CHECK YOUR SON< WE ARE AFFRAID OF Getting strange DESEASE from him  !!!!

Do we really have the chance to even alive those 5 years here ?

rant over. now I need punch someone.

xunliang:

Ye what's with all the kids getting foot and mouth? It happened at a school near me. How dirty are the Chinese? Wait a minute, why am I asking? I see kids given things off the floor by their parents to play with and put in their mouths all the time. Stupid question really. Oh well, at least you've got a space program and hosted the APEC, right China?

No.

the long term health risks are too great.

While some cancers can be linked to diet, over-all health, and some possibly to genetics, pollution levels are dangerously high on most of the larger cities in the country and have caused a dramatic increase in other mostly preventable cancers. The fact that on the average day out in winter, even with a face mask, you will still taste grit in the air, not to mention burning eyes every day.

Cancer is, according to a recent report, the number 1 killer of women in China.

Combine this with hospitals that I would not visit even with something minor, like a cut, and the belief that 'magic mushrooms' (TCM) or an IV drip can cure everything from the common cold to heart attacks. (unless of course you can afford to pay for treatment at your local International hospital)

While the CPP will shut down factories for cynical PR stunts like the APEC summit recently, it is clear that profit is king and if you are not wealthy enough to be able to leave the country, then tough luck.

in addition there are the annual food scandals, be it dead diseased pigs floating towards Shanghai or rat meat being sold as port.

there is such disregard to general public health that even if you try hard to keep clean yourself, the longer you stay the greater your chance of dying of or contracting something preventable.

I can't see it at all.

Living in China is sucking the life out of me and to stay for much longer would be tantamount to putting a paper bag over my head and sitting in the corner for the rest of my life.

I mean, gees......maybe if there was something to do, somewhere to go, something to see or someone to talk to, things would be different.

But there isn't.  This place is just such a wasteland of nothingness.  My god....what do the people actually do here?

C'mon Nessie, Hit me!

Thailand has beaches and scuba diving. And jet skis. And British Breakfast. And bars with good live bands.

The Philippines has all that, too.

And, as you know, they are not far.

That's why I can see myself in China for a few more years.

Just went to splash some cold water on my face and my wife called to say we're going to our friends place for some Korean food and she hopes I haven't had too much to drink.

To our friends' place with my lovely girl...and to eat some Korean food, and drink beer....Ahhh, life's good!

TBH the only reason why I am still in China is money and opportunities I have to make more of it through my business, I don't really like the place, the people or the food and the pollution is making me sick from time to time.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
