Q: Do you think that Beijing can successfully host a Winter Olympics?

I know that they are capable of developing the infrastructure. And, they have no fear about spending money on such things. But I am referring to the climate challenges that they have. After all, Beijing does not have lots of snowfall every year. And, the ski resorts are not up to international standards.

Have they decided on the venue?  I didn't think so.  All the cities bailed out except Beijing and Astana.  Or was it Almaty... I wanted to bet my house that it would go to Kazakhstan BECAUSE BEIJING ISN'T FIT FOR HUMANS!

Eorthisio:

Yep, it was already reported that Beijing is barely suitable for human life during winter time when the pollution levels peak :

And it is even worse this winter apparently. Summer Olympics in 2008 were kind of okay because Beijing was less polluted back them and it is cleaner in summer than winter for obvious energy consumption, people use AC during summer but not as much as they use heaters during winter.

On the other hand the government can ban cars and shut down the nearby power plants during the olympics to save face, then redirect the needed energy from other provinces because who cares whether or not Hebei and Shaanxi peasants got power in their homes.

I am against cities and countries bidding for all the various games.  It's a total waste of money.

Olympics games?  Why can't they just build a venue in Greece and use it every 4 years. Winter Olympics... build a venue in the north where it snows.  Football world cup.... it should be in the UK where the game was invented.

I was in Guangzhou when they hosted the Asian games.  I remember the paper footpaths and the painted buildings. It was a massive waste of money that could have been better spent elsewhere.

Ah.  I forgot about that

That's why they invented pizza here too. An ideal half time snack.

Ha ha. Imagine if a Chinese city won the "Boules world cup".  A Chinese archeologist would discover the oldest boules in some cave in Yunnan wink

lots of controversy about sporting events these days...  the Olympic committee  and  FIFA, world cup, and ...  these guys do need a wakeup call, in my opinion....  about time they got told that the people (ordinary people) are important too.

see

Of course they can! They can lie, they same way they did to get the 2008 Olympics. It's all about face and money for the IOC anyway, so that works for the powers that be in BJ too.

Need snow, cold weather...frag the environment to get it...same with clean air and sunshine.

Need a 3000m mountain, create it with the unlimited funds that would otherwise be wasted on healthcare and education.

Face, face, face, face, face, face, face, face, ad infinitum.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
