Q: Do you think that building subways in tier 2 cities are necessary?

Subway systems are being built all over China. Almost every tier 2 city I've been to (Chengdu, Shengyang, Dalian, Ningbo, etc) has construction going on for a subway. Some Chinese friends of mine told me that they think that their cities don't need this form of transportation.

Subways once you have outlayed the huge initial cost are the best public transport solution for any large city. They move lots of people quickly and are environmentaly sound as well. Shenyang subway is great and I can get from one side of the city to the other in around 20 mins instead of over an hour on a bus caught in traffic. Very modern and impressive system.

Should every tier 2 city have subways? I don't know, maybe. The problem is that they can't really afford it, and if they want to go underground, there's so much stuff already there there's no room to dig. Also, considering the quality of the trains here, it might be "environmentally sound," but after the accident in Wenzhou, I think everyone is questioning their safety. Did you read this article?

Yes certainly needed if you live in a big city(what ever tier it may be) that does not have a subway system you will know how long it takes to get around the city...
If the City has the money they should certainly build one...

I think if the layout for the lines is planned well then it can dramatically improve the lives of people living in these cities, giving everyone more free time and less time sitting on a bus...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
