Q: Do you understand gasoline prices in China?

I have been visiting China for over 15 years now, and lived here for about the last 6 of those.  Gasoline prices at service stations according to signs have always been around 94 to 97 kuai per liter.  That was when oil was at $ 150+ dollars per barrel, and also now that it is $ 36 + per barrel.  In USA it was over $ 4.00+ per gallon (just under 4 liters), now is at less than $ 2.00, and that includes all the taxes, etc.

Why it does not change like at any other place abroad?  Someone must be making one hell of a profit these days.

Any thoughts or explanations as to why?

Well, every day a fool shows up, and since I am not perfect, it was my turn!  I honestly thought those were prices, not gasoline grades.  At least that is what you advertise abroad, prices.

Since I do not go into a service station for gasoline, I will make a point next time I am free to do so and find the real prices.  I ported the question because I was curious, and with my excuses to "cub", I did not recall your post, I do not seek, nor steal "glory" here, and lately just post when there are no answers, or wrong answers in my opinion.

And I did suspect some sort of government subside, just wanted confirmation.

My thanks to all thet replied.

Have a look at the purchased bus ticket. It doesn't show, which bus departure you purchased, but it shows time when ticket was purchased.

Why do I need to know that? I always thought, I must know which bus I must board few minutes before departure. Add to that confusion laowai can usually recognise only numbers in Chinese text....

It's most likely 'higher tax' for people with money (cars) in China.

Nobody really knows, how much Chinese pay per barrel on open market, so price at the pump in China is also 'stabile'surprise

Extra money goes toward 'building of infrastructure in China', so 'cause for never changing price is 'positive'.angel

'Supply/demand' rule doesn't apply in China same as in West.

94 to 97? Don't you mean 9.4 to 9.7? 94 kuai is about $14!

Petrol prices in Guangdong are between 5 & 6 kuai a little at the moment. Have been for a while.

 You were right! Partially.

Mini Cooper always was considered 'suicide machine'. It was the first car with engine in the back (around 1965-70), so at front collisions, it's only air between front bumper and driver/passengers. Proceed with caution.

94 and 97 are not the price, they are the grade of the gas, similar to the octane level. The price is listed in the small display screen under it.

Hotwater:

Hahaha, I hadn't thought of that! Used to be 93 & 98. Guangdong now use slightly cleaner 92 & 97!

@ happyexpat u are lucky u had your question answered not told by a ECC member why not get your lazy tail up and find out yourself about gas prices like I was rudely told! wow, it must be nice to ask a question like this and get some real honest legit helpful answers Here i tried asking a simular question like this months ago and all i got was hateful insulting remarks never had my question answered but got jumped on! So what makes a simular question asked from a different person on ECC any different than my same question months ago? Anyone care to explain this? Why the double standards here? And no, it had nothing to do with the way or type of question either! Come on ECC members lets hear your bogus excuses if u remember the same question I asked months ago!

You don't understand! Posters don't want to tell you anything they know about China!

Why they would? What did you tell us about anything, beside names calling?

Look at Happy's posting history, and you'll mostly see helpful advices in his replies, which are happily given back to him in return.

I might score 2 extra pints for this comment.

There is little competition.

Also, the profit made by the individual gas station owner has nothing to do with the price of the product but more to do with how much he waters down the product.

Smile Look, it is easy:  just 94 and 97 are not the price.

These are the grade of the gas, pretty similar to the octane level http://www.toinnov.com/news/. The price is listed in the small display screen under it.

Aside from the misunderstanding of written "chinese" which you couldn't really be blamed for you were on the right track with someone making huge profits out of petro in PRC.

The name of the company is Sinopec Group. You see their logo everywhere in PRC. It is a state-owned company and the "people" there controlled gasoline prices PRCwide.

I used to know someone who was working there in a non-business context. Out of the corrupted companies in PRC Sinopec ranks easily among the top five. The core management are CCP members, the money they pocket is astronomical and I am not joking. Sinopec ranks among the top 10 of Fortune Global 500 consistently for the last ten years.

This group has a definitive say within the CCP. And environmental pollution is deeply connected to the inferior gasoline they produce. This is similar to using sub-standard construction material to reap maximum profit.

Trust me, you don't want to be anywhere near these creatures, generally speaking. I would rather fondle a cobra than associate with these "people".
