QQ is okay, but has a higher chance of transmitting viruses, spam or being 'monitored' by authorities.

Personally, for chat, I prefer Skype. The quality is better than any of the others and has a greater ease of use in my opinion.  But, saying that, I do have pretty much all of the chat programs you mentioned running at various times for various reasons.

I use QQ (international version), because almost all people here uses it, and second reason - QQi have built-in translator, that works just fine, and helps to communicate with those who don't know the languages that I know...

for calling phones in my home country, and also for long-time chats with friends I use Skype, and I'm satisfied in 100%

I tried GoogleTalk, but only few of my friends uses it, so I drop it. Quality was not so bad, but I found Skype little better

One else... QQ is very useful to transfer short files on the route China - China (for example some urgent but no confidential xls or doc, pictiures etc.).

In this field it is better (quicker) than mail, specially if the mail should go thru GreatWall and back again.

QQ is popular, useful and easy to use. Millions of people in China use it and a large number of companies also use it. To some extent, it is more important than a mobile phone.

i use qq to communicate with my Chinese friends and its a good way to practice your Chinese, it will help you recognize characters quicker, i realized that if i dont  look at characters from day to day its easy to forget them, at the moment i use the English qq for mac and its a piece of crap you cant do much on it, cant change your picture you cant switch of that sound unless i stop the sound for the whole laptop, and i dont know why the video feature doesnt work only audio, but i use the Chinese qq for my iPhone and its really good, one thing i really like about qq is that even with a slow village internet connection still works fine

brenda723:

actually you can change your picture and switch off that sound, you just don't know how. you can add me on qq,and i'll show you 1072140120

I have QQ, because in China it is pretty ubiquitous. If I want to keep in touch with Chinese people (and I do) it's pretty much a must have.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
