Q: does anybody participate or follow any Chinese sports?
suppose there are a few outdoor pick-up basketball games around, lots of football (soccer) fields with opportunities to join. Badminton and Ping Pong are surely everywhere..... Tennis? gyms are loner things... swimming in the piss pools is good exercise.
I follow Guangzhou Fuli (R&F) in the Chinese football league. Standard of football is okay though not great. Atmosphere is good and I can get a beer before the game outside the ground.

My first and only football game, soccer, in China was in Jinan and it was rather disappointing even though I got the tickets for free.
The crowd was cursing and very rude the whole game, bad calls, you enemy scores, fine raise a little hell, but the whole game.
No one selling any food or drink, at the half, had to walk down to get a warm nasty coke and some stale popcorn, that's all they had.
The police had cameras all around the track on tripods taking pictures of all the assholes cussing and acting like 2 legged animals. Reminded of a terrorist watch alert during a crowded sports events. A little security overkill in my opinion.
In retrospect I don't know why anybody would pay 90 rmb for such nonsense. I give the free tickets to the security guards at my complex now and the guards make sure nobody bothers me.
I also brought a date, big mistake, hardly any women go to the games, so the men have another reason to act like complete idiots. The Chinese spectators were not very original in the cursing either "stupid bastard" in Chinese is rather boring to repeat a whole game, surely they have some more colorful language they could use.

Interesting to read of your experience in Jinan. I've only started watching GZ Fuli this season but the crowd of about 13,000 a game are quite mixed. Fair few kids & young ladies. Generally good natured as well. Very little to buy in the ground but we drink 5 kuai bottles of beer before the game (& at half time) at the small shop outside the ground.
cock fighting is fun if you like to gamble.
