I have a couple expat friends that carry a pocket knife, but something that happened to me recently has made me want to carry something to defend myself. Police are useless here.
I don't, probably because I'm Chinese too and I blend in perfectly. However, if you live in a sleazy part of town then you may want to have something on you. Penknives are useless because hooligans carry bigger weapons. I have a very ugly looking knuckle rustler that can do a lot of damage but I don't carry it on me. It has a protruding curved knife, much like a Gurkha's kukri knife. Small but deadly. Used it when I was in Cambodia a long time ago.
Yes. I carry a huge knife. I call it the "Neck Smiley" because when someone tries to kill you, and you slit their throat, they've got a new smiley face on their neck.
I also carry a gun. I know where to buy them. People say I'm a fucking idiot for carrying a gun, but it's saved my life more than once. A bullet in the head solves everything.
Your life and the lives of your family are infinitely more important than the scum and villainy that infest every pore of that decaying country. No apologies.
you are looking for more trouble by having a weapon
1 you most likely will have it used against you
2 end up in front of a judge
the best weapon your have is you brain and knowing when you are the wrong place.
for me I live by that old saying
Im to old for that shit (and I doubt if I could back i up anymore either )
Don't go looking for trouble you will always loose
crimochina:
I was told this once by a cop in the states. In the eyes of the law you are better off learning how to use everyday objects as weapons. If you have a weapon, then you will be judged more harshly. Essential they will look to say you went too far. Good to say you back also. This site has become s little bit of a bore
Looking at the nature of the questions you have asked, it would appear that you have done something to attract trouble rather than just being a victim of it. Maybe your best defence is pack up your things and move elsewhere.
Robk:
Then tell us, we aren't out to get you. We are all expats and should share in our experiences to try and prevent the same thing from happening to others.
There is nothing wrong with saying what went down.
I carry a sturdy cane, perfectly designed to be unnoticeable as a weapon yet devestating on impact.
6 years in Asia, never had any weapon of any kind, and I have been to many remote and dodgy places. I'm small and I'm discrete (no loud clothing), nobody notice me if I wear a hat or a hood, that's my weapon.
What the hell is going on here?
Who needs a damn weapon in China? Stop posting the same damn questions with no info. Tired of the vagina monologues.
If someone did something to you than be a man and handle it. People like you are dangerous. Pussys in real life, then go back to message boards and rant. Next youll be in a shopping mall with a machine gun.
You lost. Get over it. You should have stood up for yourself before. Do it next time.

Who the hell needs a damn weapon in China?

To name a few... sorry, but China is more dangerous than most expats think. If he's just trying to get revenge for getting his ass kicked, then that's stupid... but if people are threatening his life, and the lives of his family, then he needs to get the hell out of China with them as soon as possible.
In the mean time, if either him or his family's life is threatened, then he has to protect himself and his family. A weapon will do that. Merely brandishing it is enough to make most people go away.
mike695ca:
Hulk. Bad things happen everywhere. You could walk into a terrorist plot anywhere. But the chances are tiny. You could also get hit by a car. Or the floor gives out upstairs and a bathtub falls on your damn head. Yea, if your really in trouble and some triads put a bounty on your head. A weapon could be good. But just walking around? Although i have had this conversation with many an american so talking about the right to bear arms is always a dead end conversation haha.
Hulk:
Yar.
I'm American, so we've all got hard-ons for guns (except liberals). I was raised with the mentality to be "always prepared," so it's kind of hard to depart from that. I've been in so many shitty situations (I seem to have the worst fucking luck) that I would never want to be unprepared when the time comes.
ScotsAlan:
I prefer to take the chance that I will not be in the location of a terrorist attack, rather than be in a public, or indeed a private, place surrounded by numpties armed to the teeth ready to defend me.
WCG:
Wow Mike, you're Canadian right? Yet, I'm curious. Is your last name Bush? How about Cheney? Real f*ckin cowboy. No one's buying your macho B.S. Jesus, how did you ever find a wife who would put up with that sh*t? You sound like a "trust fund" baby. Maybe that's the attraction. I love it when these internet personalities really come out of the woodwork. I bet a hundred bucks you're a homophobe. Edit: Hulks actually funny, you're not even funny. Like a big kid. Wait, wait...let me guess, your favorite movie is Fast & Furious. I liked your old avatar, "stud leaning up against his car." Yay!
mike695ca:
Haha wow! Was it the vagina monologues part? FYI my favorite movie is A History of Violence. You should know by now that even if Fast and Furious is kind of dumb its unacceptable worldwide to say you dont like those movies ( except part 2 and tokyo drift , those sucked) thats probably why your running for your life now. As for the Bush and Cheney comment, aparently you missed my disagreement with the right to bear arms. But its ok, i understand. Your angry and unable to stand up for yourself in real life like a man so you lash out at people from the safety of the internet. Carry on!
You should avoid fighting when possible. A friend of mine got in a fight with a chinese guy once. Some random guy who saw this shouted "a foreigner is attacking a chinese". Then two more random people ran to the aid of the chinese guy. My friend is not the one who started the fight. He lost the fight and the police were going to make him pay the chinese compensation. He was lucky his wife's family had guanxi.
mike695ca:
The last fight i got in was against 3 dudes and no word of a lie. Numerous chinese came to help me. Im not saying theu started punching their own. But they made damn sure no one touched me. I got home. And i was the " did that really just happen?" I thoight for sure id get swarmed.
Hulk:
I also got in a fight with 3 people (in-laws), and the whole neighborhood rushed to our defense. It shocked me.
But yes, I agree with you: always avoid fighting when need be. Problem is, my brother-in-law is a triad son of a bitch, and I had other things going on thanks to my ex, so I had to carry protection.
What the KCUF!
So from the recent attacks you are assuming China as country where every now and then you have to get in to such attacks. Or you trying to make people think of China that insecure? Or you have done something horrible which made you think about it?
I lived in PK, working with a sensitive organization that was always on hit list of terrorists but I never thought of carrying weapons on me. Though we had security but I personally believe we can't do anything against mass mobilization towards terror. Remember, Bin Ghazi incident, the American arsenal of security couldn't save the poor staff of the embassy in Libya.
I am in favor of avoiding the targeted areas instead of taking myself as 'Captain America'.
My suggestion to you is,' Ticket back home may not cost you if compared with your life or CONSULT A GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST.
Weapons are everywhere, no need to carry them. You could stab someone in the eye with a damned chopstick and ruin their day.
Beer makes a good weapon, fire a warning shot with spray, if that fails the bottle makes a nice club or projectile. Never drink beer in cans.
The only protection I carry in China is a face mask. PM 2.5 is the biggest (and most likely) threat you will face here.
Yes. I have a metal retractable nightstick. I literally just figured out today what it was. It has been in my ebike since I arrived here and I thought it was some kind of lock or tool for the bike. I picked it up and flicked it and that's when it expanded. I don't know why it was in there. And I don't feel any more or less safe now knowing that I have it. I prefer to defend myself with my body if necessary.
I'm of the mind here that if you make good choices you're in way more danger from traffic than assaults/fights.
I'm not a huge guy (6-foot and a thin 180lbs). I'm neither small/vulnerable enough to pick on nor big/aggressive looking enough to make drunk tough guys want to make a run at me.
Now I've gotten into a few shouting matches/arrogance contests but I never really felt like any of those would come to blows, though of course i'm ready to throw a punch if need be. I don't know what you guys do that puts you in situations where fights with locals actually come up. I don't have any problems with consistently getting into confrontations...with non-confrontational cowards.
To WCG...honestly you need to look in the mirror and figure out what you're doing wrong that you feel endangered here. Are you living someplace stupid? Are you behaving aggressively? I mean you can't control everybody else, so look at what you can do to be safe. People harassing you on the street? Live somewhere else. Getting jumped at a bar? Stop going to that bar. Unless you have a dream job at a specific company there probably isn't anything tying you to where you are.
You can never be 100% safe anywhere but really if you consistently make good choices personal security does NOT have to be a constant issue in China...no matter what your income bracket.
You aren't going to change anything in that community. Fuck everybody else and put yourself in a happy situation, for your own sake.
I always carry protection. Never know when the gf might decide she needs a romp, or if the boss's wife needs a fix (lol cool story bro).
Oh, now i see the (weapon) descriptor. In that case, I've always got a couple guns available. *Flexes biceps*
Seriously...you're better off avoiding any confrontation that might actually necessitate the use of weapons in the first place.
Been in Shanghai for a few years now and never carried or needed protection, my wife frequently takes me to dodgy alleyways for food at stupid o'clock in the morning surrounded by drunks and idiots and not once has anything ever happened. I don't remember even being shouted at in the street to be honest.... Which is lucky because i'm 30 now and far too lazy to fight anyone or shout back at people.
I never needed anything like that, because... well you know, I don't need to because...
I am Iron Man
I've suffered two bottles over the head, and cracked ribs so I decided no more Chinese night clubs...
What , you mean you need a weapon ?
geez , I don't need them . I have had people try to start stuff with me only to have security or police to show up and remedy the situation .
But I have the reputation of not being a rebel rouser.
so i don't need one, if i need anything i use my hands , former soldier here.
I took Karate lessons for almost a week when I was 13 years old. And I wear "High Karate" cologne as a back up. I obviously have no worthy foe!
always have my knife on me. but more from just my upbringing than any plans to use it to defend myself. but it is nice to know I have it if worst comes to worst.
I carry a switchblade knife, the main advantage is that you can lock the blade inside the handle, which makes it smaller and safer, and you can instantly release it with a simple switch.
Not that China is a dangerous place, but there is a rising nationalistic sentiment and in first tier cities some groups of (cowards) nationalist youths don't hesitate anymore to provoke foreigners when they are 20 VS 1 (no Chinese would ever dare at 1 VS 1 or even 5 VS 1, they are pussies).
Now this is extremely rare but there have been cases where these youths (who probably can't get girls) have beaten foreigners at 15 VS 1 only because they were dating local girls. Thus I won't take any risk and I think me having a weapon will make them think twice before attacking me when they see it.
I got involved in a fight last year with two taxi drivers who drive illegal cabs at night. I just learnt that don't face chinese in china you will always loose.
I always bring my lightsaber, for safety I put it between my legs
