Q: Does anyone know of any good open-source plays for highschool students?

I teach High school students, and want to do something different with them.

I originally wanted to introduce them to Shakespeare, but most native English speakers can't understand it, let alone them.  I know that there are "modern English" versions out there, but I don't know if any of them are any good.

Can anyone recommend any appropriate sites?

Any alternative suggestions?

Has anyone tried anything like this?  If so, how did it turn out?

I tired the following with some English Major Uni students.

I gave them a selection of short simple stories,

broke them into random groups

they had to then interpret and perform the stories in their own way.

This was an expansion on giving them a role-play scenario

it was a hoot for all

I'd have to check if i still have the links i used

anything that had the possibility of over-dramatic situations was a good jump-off point for their creativity

I was thinking of doing something along those lines, but wasn't sure if the level would be too high from them.

sorrel:

maybe stories like that are at too high a level now

I found once the students got used to the idea over a few months by doing preliminary simple role-plays, they really became creative and more flexible.

In fact it became something of a competition between the different groups to perform outrageously - with hilarious results for all

I did this once, take one of his short works  and make it into a project to first re-write it into modern English and then they could perform it.

sorrel:

I found that the students became more expressive in their English and the flat tone used by most speakers became less and less heard.

Great way to incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension (I hate how students here just regurgitate crap here verbatim)
