Q: Does it matter, having more than one profile on ECCA?

Recently, I was talking to a user who has more than one profile here at eChinaCites Answers. They stated that it does no harm, because the same "personality" comes through, and that "many" people were doing it. So, for the sake of discussion, I thought I would put the question to all of you. Does it matter? Where is the harm?

1. I only have one account.

2. It's up to you to believe that or not.

3. I don't care about 'multis' EXCEPT,

When they use those multiple accounts to 'gang up' on other posters and try and scare them off. They know who they are and they piss me off.

I agree. That seems to be the main concern; trying to flood the board with one-sided opinions and skew the perception.

I've been a member of ECC for 3 years and have enjoyed being a peasant for most of the time.   I'm all on my own, I have very little knowledge about how this place works but I do know that it is biased and generates a lot of bullies.   I'm just trying to level the playing field.  Just for doing this, people have began to bully me - 'water off a ducks back'.

Those GANGS of bullies know who they are, they are the people who will curse and swear directly at people just because they have a different valid, or non valid point of view.  As far as they are concerned that is their democratic right, what they forget is, that with democracy comes responsibility. It's not a very good example to show to those Chinese who have a positive attitude to change. The ignorant behaviour of the bullies will just confirm what millions of Chinese already believe

They don't appear to have any genuine positive interest in China, they just want to belittle.   They offer nothing constructive to this site or to those millions of Chinese who are slowly trying to make a difference.

What bothers me most is that I get the impression that some members of these 'gangs' are 'so called' teachers and I wonder what hate they are spreading to their students.

I've no doubt that I'll be lambasted by the usual suspects but I will not be cursing back, just using my mirrors.

And there in lies the problem, Loke. It is one of perception and response. This is, in effect, a forum for expats-in-China. It is not, really, your obligation nor duty to provide a balance. There are plenty of users who do so in a responsible and informative manner. What you see is what you get, and definitely, what you post is what one will respond to.

If you post anti-western rhetoric, expect an unfavorable review. In actuality, most of the users here post both good things and bad things about China. It is inevitable to see that bad over the good if one is used to different standards, and both the bad and the good are a result of comparing current standards with those that one is used to in their "home country."

The use of "bully" is both sophomoric and ineffective. Sorry, but it is. The application of such words (bully, gang, etc.) derives from a standardized lexicon which seeks to label people without an exchange towards mediation. If you use such terms, expect the same in return.

And then, where will everyone be? Locked in a contest of verbiage until communication is bereft of meaning. You throw out terms and ideas, but fail to follow them yourself, expecting others to play by the rules while you jettison the playing field and then cry "foul!"

Your use of "hate" is flippant. Do you truly know the meaning of the word? Most users here are not teachers, and the teachers that are here are responsible professionals, teaching in China because they want to learn about this unique culture and, yes, take advantage of the opportunities it encompasses.

Now, I don't know if you live in China. If you do, great. Wonderful. Then you should know the reality of the situation, which is: Chinese people will believe whatever they want to. There could be 5 million perfect foreign folks walking around speaking the Queen's English and acting with impeccable manners, and just one lone slob acting recklessly, and guess what their opinion of foreigners would be? Yep. The one lone slob. Sorry once again, but that is fact. Here is another revelation; the Chinese people, as a whole, don't care what you think! You are not their champion. This is not a generalization. As a whole, it is true. Individuals be may changed, but the amount of people anyone of us will influence in a country with 1.4 billion people is akin to a one cat eating his way through at a football stadium full of fish. In other words, it just ain't gonna happen. The Chinese users here know what the deal is. And, they know not to take it to heart.

Speaking personally, if you present me with an argument that has both passion and teeth, then I will listen. Now, this is not directed at you, but in the grand scheme of things, ignorant I can deal with. I have, however, little time for stupid. And yes, I am intelligent and perceptive enough to tell the difference. I teach my students to do the same, not only for their survival, but for the betterment of their country.

I will close with this caveat. Tone down the rhetoric a little, and you will get a much better response, and maybe a willing audience, from those who gather here. I'm sure you are a nice enough fellow.

Now, all you have to do is show it.

Haha, really enjoy reading you guys, it's an educashun. But Giadrosich, I honestly don't know why you waste your considerable intellect on a man like Loke who is, for all his clear enjoyment of the fight, just trying to get folks to act a little more decent. I just don't get it. I say 'Good on you Loke, there is a place for your voice!' and 'Giadrosich, you've got more important things you could do with yours'.

As for whether any of this shit matters, well shit, of course it don't.

PS: Giadrosich, this thing about how Chinese will believe the first thing they see, is actually universal. It's just people. They/We all do that. It's the oldest, most tedious shit in the book. It's just people wanting to believe they actually know what the hell is going on and who all these wierdos around them actually are. It's not just a Chinese thing.

On reflection posting the word 'poop' is unlikely to score me any points in terms of gaining respect for my intellectual prowess, but you see where i'm coming from. Different people. Me and Loke.   Haha, you sir, are talking about me, aren't you? And what I said in fact was that it didn't bother me how many accounts a person chooses to express themselves through, because it's still the same person coming through them in the end. If you like that person, chat with them, if you don't, don't. Does it matter? Not to me. To thine own self be true.

I discovered someone who was using another account to boost his points. He used one 'pheasant' or 'shoulder' or whatever the names are in this class structure system (i'm a Soldier I think, but soon, ooh, ooh, i'm going to be a Minor Official, weeee) to boost the points on his 'gonorrheal'. But he also used the same account to attack me on, so I called him on it and he quit it. But i'm not gonna shop the guy, big deal, if he wants to do that, let him, it's sweet.

How many have I got? Ask the cat, for my answer, like anyone else's, does not matter, because if you think i've got three or five or ten, then that's what i've got. But as littlemick said, what would be the point? Boost points? Go get 'em! But they won't make you happy:)

giadrosich:

I agree, in that it doesn't matter to me, but one reason I could see would be to manipulate what is seen and what is not, and as a way to give themselves points, as that is based off user interaction. It all comes down to control. And yes, there are people who are that petty. But no, I wasn't specifically talking about you. I've had the same conversations with others in the past who have had additional profiles. I just thought I'd put the question out there, to see what others thought about the practice.

But as I mentioned, personally, I don't care. Cheers! wink

Ok, well then good on you my friend. As for people trying to manipulate the system of this site, direct arguments, play mind games or whatever else they imagine they're doing with their various online persona, again, all I can say is good luck to them. Anyone who thinks this little website is so important that it bares such attention is free to blow their skirt up over their head with as many personalities as they can muster for all I care. If a single one of them is interesting, i'll ignore the others and talk to that one. Simple.

For my 2 cents it does give me the shits when it is used just to gain points or to push a argument one way.

however if it was like a radio show or the Simpsons where you know who is behind who

I would be cool with it.

the trouble is certain users with multiple accounts are just Dicks
