Are there lots of single Tibetan males who can't get a wife because there are more men than women? What are Tibetan attitudes towards women anyway? And do Tibetan women also expect them to have a car and a house before the wedding?
According to the latest national demographic statistics:
Tibetans as an ethnicity in total : 6,282,187 Men 3,155,625 50.23% women 3,126,562 49.77%.
I don't know about Tibetan women's expectations about their fiances.
However, there is this "interesting" thing that you might like to know:
The guy whose death caused the 1989 event made a policy when he was in position. This policy gave minorities like Tibetans and Uyghurs exceptions or loosen trials when they conduct crimes, in the purpose of "respecting their local culture and tradition". The Chinese Baidu encyclopedia of this policy sited a few cases of rapes. If you don't mind, I'd like to translate some sentences from that item.
"rape has always been a serious crime charge as a severe violation to women's rights. However, in minorities of Tibetans, Mongolians and 土家族, due to their long historical traditions and customs, premarital sex is common. Not only adultery is often seen, but also sex without the woman's consent happens now and then. If trial them as rapists, the victim women would be discriminated and laughed at by the society, instead of getting sympathy." Then the article listed two cases of rapes and the trials and how the victims got cursed by the locals.
Then the article listed the trial difficulty with pedophiles charges (raping girls under 14 ), polygamy charges, polyandry charges, brothers sharing one wife, sisters sharing one husband...
Well I must say that I know very little about Tibet and Tibetans. This encyclopedia can be edited by folks like wikipedia, but without much censorship as long as it's not political sensitive. This item obviously gives a very negative viewpoint of their culture. However I dont know how the reality is like. I hope people don't get preconceived feelings or opinions while everyone stays safe and justice is enforced..
China astonishes me with its odd things pretty often too.......
:
ohChina, I enjoy reading the information you provide us with and I hope I can lhear more from you. It adds knowledge to my ignorance about China. Thanks
JungleLife:
The Chinese Baidu encyclopedia. That would be censored to the nuts man, anything that is not in harmony with the CCP makes it politically sensative.
I am not saying some things in there are true, but not really a reliable source for information.
The Tibetan is one of the few nationalities that are not affected by the one-child policy, they are permitted to any number of children. This should make the gender imbalance lower than in other parts of China.
There are a lot of places with single males and females. And I assume everybody expects the person to at least have a house, but probably not a car.
