Q: Doing part time esl jobs on the side?

I'm looking for a part time esl job on the side. I wondered if schools tax part time salaries. I also wondered, if when schools said curriculum provided, that means little lesson preparation required. I'm guessing I do not have time to prepare lessons properly .

EDIT.   I would never not put enough effort in for a lesson. In my previous job as an esl teacher I did on average just under 20 hours prep. I'm just looking curious about the "curriculum provided, minimal lesson prep required". I might have time for that

A friend of mine employed legitimately in a training school that said "curriculum was provided" found that the supplied lesson plans were not fit for purpose and reworked them himself.

you know all the legitimacy issues about 'moonlighting' so it is your choice to do it nor not

if you are as committed a teacher as you say, you might find that supplied material is useless for anything except kitty-litter.

so, would you be willing to work twice as much?

if i was told that there were supplied lesson plans, i'd ask for a sample first before accepting the job.

So you want to earn some money illegally on the side but want to just turn up after doing no preparation?

And you wonder why English teachers her have a bad reputation amoung other expats?

dokken:

We'll minimal preparation would be good. That is what they sometimes say in the advertisement. I would not want to shortchange anybody's education. Let's be honest, we all know foreign teachers make minimal difference compared to good Chinese instructors of English.

No, good foreign teachers make a huge difference. Can you show me the 'r' in usually? Most Chinese teachers teach Chinglish, then the student goes forth thinking natives speak wrong because 'my Chinese teacher told us ...'. Or they keep failing the IELTS but do not know why. Please.

Still, perhaps there is a job out there that requires no prep or little prep. Oh yea, it's called kindergarten.

Or maybe Wall Street or? (seriously)

@bill: 'I can!

''youzzz' -rest- 'uuaa' -rest- 'li'', and again.

Don't you ever think, it would be better to teach English Chinese English teachers than students? Let say some 5h a week for teachers and 10h for students.

Your RP is tied to one, full-time employer, so any 'moonlightning' is illegal. Maybe not enforced, but it's illegal.

If there's PSB check at your part-time school, you might expect troubles. I'd be careful in big cities.

Part-time salary goes straight to my pocket. Before I accept part-time, I always know how much I'll earn per class or per hour.

Shining_brow:

But do remember that if there is a raid by the police, they're unlikely to check who the RP is being sponsored by... only that you've got one.

I'm not sure, what PSB does at raids. I've never been to one. It's just my assumption, if you're entitled to work elsewhere, PSB would give you hard time in part-time job.

They must be looking for legal documents as RP and FEC, to find out who's legal.

Don't let them tax you. Do you pay taxes when you get paid under the table at home? No. "Taxes" on part-time work are just a discount for the employer.

icnif77:

I agree. That's an excuse of the part-time employer. Can't pay tax for 'illegal work'.

Yea, Chinese employers have been known to take out such "taxes" which go right into their new car fund.
