Q: Empty Cash Machines?

Yup..its that time of year. The cash machines are empty and any that do have cash left have dozens of people lined up. What do you do to withdaw cash? My option is to run up tabs. I dont want to stand for 2 hours behind people moving 50rmb from one account to another.... Goodness me....even the easiest things become impossible at times.

ScotsAlan,

Now you understand why the old people that lived through the Cultural Revolution have literally stacks of cash stashed in their houses, workplaces, buried in jars underground, etc. They didn't trust the banks and didn't want to wait in line. I used to think it was paranoia until I had to wait in line at the bank a few times.....jesus christ.......it is always good to have at least 1 G in RMB in cash close by for those rainy days, or month of spring festival.

All you can really do is try to get your cash way ahead of time. If you leave it until the hour before you need it you might find yourself in an annoying situation.

This is a great chance to use your superpower as all of us Westerners have.... Planning ahead. OK, so you need a time machine to get it done this year, but.... GET CASH EARLIER.... perhaps use manager69s tips for how to store cash at home

I find ATM machines are out of cash at all times of year. It's just like the restaurants with an extensive menu that only have 40% of the dishes available at any given time. Oh China...

3 bank accounts. Always have about 4000 cash somewhere. 4000 RMB, not pounds!

Keep at least 7-10000 in each account. PITA? Not really. Always able to pay for stuff or get cash. ICBC, ABC, CMB, B of China, B of Comm etc. ... whatever. Pick 3.

I found BofC and China Construction Bank cards useful around Asia. CCB saved my ass in Coron not too long ago.

(oh ... hate the US? Fine, who cares. But when travelling $100 bills are quite useful in a fix. Just a suggestion. Carry them, hope you don't use them. That's all. Simple.)

Oh only about 1500 in ICBC. connected to Taobao, AliSteal etc, so if someone *borrows* that money, I won't cry too much.

I send some home twice a year. I see no reason to keep alotta money here. I know! RMB will be the reserve currency blah blah blah rule the world! I prefer dollars, thanks.

End gratuitous advice post.

Good advice. I might open an ABC account as a backup.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is 'Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by 1. Finding an employer; 2. Employer applies for an Invitation letter; 3. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
