Q: Euro-cup is such a big deal here. how come?

Hello all

So it might absolutely be just because back in my country football is not as big as in Europe, but i noticed the Euro-cup is kinda a big deal around here, with most bar's TV being tuned on it. And i'm not only talking about bars for foreigners, but also bars where nearly only Chinese people go too, my friends also keep asking me if i saw this match or this one.  So does anyone know why the Euro-cup and football is such a big deal here ? Or is it just me ?

And do they have an Asia cup or something similar ? Cause for me China was big on ping pong and swimming kinda ( weirdly knowing a lot of Chinese adults can't swim).  What sports do you guys think is big in China ?

Yep, Football is a big sport in China, especially European teams/leagues. Walk around Guangzhou and you'll see loads of younger Chinese wearing the shirts of the bigger European clubs.

You'll also find a big following now for the domestic teams, especially those with money to splash out (Guangzhou Evergrande, Beijing Bao'an, Shanghai Shenghua, etc).

There is an Asian equivalent but the Chinese national team currently isn't very good.

It's a pretty new thing. China wants to become a force in football and they're promoting the sport, injecting more money etc. Also, hanging out at bars and watching the game is "so cool", because it's an American/British/white thing.

The kids at school have only heard of Messi and Ronaldo and they can't even recognize their faces, so following football and sports in general is not nearly as big as in other parts of the world.

It's the "European Championships 2016" its popular as it gives the Chinese Football fans a chance to see some good football unless they watched  England hehe..
