Q: Ever seen a random photo of yourself somewhere?

Most foreigners here get photo requests almost daily plus all of the pics taken that werent requested at all.

Then we make/hear jokes about our photos being on.someones mantle as a centerpiece.

That got me thinking. How many of my photos are on.some dudes blog or passed around on weibo or wechat or printed out for god knows what. But i have certainly never seen anything.

anyone ever been surprised with their random photos on someones wall or online?

I used to know a guy who saw his pic on a billboard. Some shitty Chinese training mill got his pic from somewhere and put it on their fliers and billboard. He had never worked there.

I was once eating in a restaurant with a girl and some old guy came up to our table. We were like... okay?

He showed us both a picture and asked if that was me... it was from a show we put on for the school and I did some street dancing... so yeah... it was me...

I was pretty shocked that some old guy was going around with a picture of me and wondered who else had them. I saw my friend's faces up on huge electronic billboards promoting schools they didn't even work at anymore...

That would freak me the hell out seeing my face on a billboard. Id sue. Not for money, but to just have it taken down.

A former student sent me a flyer for some English school with my smiling pic front and center. Said (in Chinese) I am their best teacher, worked there for years.

Never heard of 'em.

Same as Stiggs, except the guy's wife found a billboard of him advertising jeans, or something. He looked like he was walking to work.

I was surprised once to learn that I am a foreign expert in urban planning who met with the urban development bureau a branch of the government here in Foshan. My photo was plastered along with the official running that office on those billboards they always put around construction sites. I never did and probably never will meet that guy.

Also it happens that people around my city recognize me since I appeared on the local TV quite a few times. A local "celebrity" haha.

never had a casual picture abused for any purposes. well, except that one time at the memorial night for the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. i was passing by, saw the candles, stopped to look. someoneshouted "prayer" at me, so rather than try to explain i'm not religious, i made a prayer-pose. the next day, my wife saw my picture on a forum with the comment: "if even a foreigner can stop to offer prayer, then why do many Chinese keep walking?"

other than that, my image is used by my school for advert purposes and promotions, so they have exclusive rights to me. one time, my apartment owner asked to take pictures with me holding zhongzi, those triangle rice snacks for dragon boat festival. they put it on billboards and commercials all over town. my boss was livid, and demanded rather rudely that my apartment owner remove everything.
