Q: Is ExpressVpn legit?...

I ask because for some reason it's the only vpn website I'm able to access.

So, if it's not blocked, my fear is that the govt want you to use it to spy on you. Or am I being paranoid here?

If they're going to spy on you I don't think it would matter what VPN you use. So, if you're agent 008 I suggest using a carrier pigeon instead of emails

Seriously though, It's probably the only one that has been able to keep ahead of the great firewall, which is why it still works for you.

Huh.

But i thought the point of the the VPN is get around them spying on you?

(which is why I still don't understand this business of the VPNs being down lately because of a govt meeting. So the govt usually allow them? But they don't? But they do? Huh?)

Btw I just checked again, and the site doesn't work. So perhaps it had something to do with the coffee shop I was at before. I guess.

Stiggs:

My theory...China relies on trade/international business to make it's money. It's hard to do that from behind a firewall that blocks fucking near everything so they turn a blind eye most of the time.

vpn is not to stop ccp spying on you
it is to trick the geo block into thinking you are not in China or not where you really are .

If you're afraid of the CCP spying on you, leave.

They have access to every message sent on any social media platform, including WeChat.

While Apple and others are fighting over not letting the FBI have backdoor access to people's phone, they bent over and gave it to the CCP without a fuss.

You can't hide from the CCP, you can only keep your head down.

That being said, I use Express and seem to encounter much fewer problems than Astril users. It's satisfactory.

Tmaier:

Thanks. I'll go with Express then.

I guess there's no reason to fear being spied on if you're not guilty of anything (....right?)

Wait, is actually using a VPN a crime here? Or do they just not let you find them? Now I remember specifically what my worry was, that Express was like a 'bait-vpn' set up by the govt.

WooMow:

They're not illegal, but the internet censors do their best to keep them away from the general public. 5 years ago, you could link up to a free one pretty easily. Now they make it so that the only ones that really work are paid subscriptions, because the average local isn't gonna pay 10 bucks a month for it.

Alright, so using a VPN isn't illegal, but what about viewing certain websites...if you catch my drift...

VPNs aren't illegal. The engineers at GFW can block any or all encrypted traffic quite simply should they wish.

Mr W.Moo hit the nail on the head with his point about keeping your head down. Astrill is so high profile it is an easy target. Soon Express will follow with the chain-jerking. And that's all it is.

You'll all get 'bitten', IMO. Not you, but PNVs you're posting open on the public thread.

Same happened to porn sites, which were posted here. They all get blocked shortly.

On the other side, see this I get today at Yahoo:

http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/03/16/subgraph-os-will-snowdens-os-ch...

The thingy isn't operational as of yet, but it received 'Up-yours' support.

Linux OS, which builds 'prison' around files on the puter's hard drive as files protection from phishing/snooping/troyans and more.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
