Happy expat usally gets most things right, but on this subject he his totally wrong, you can not change your childs passport iif they were born here,to E.U citizen.Unless you dont plan to stay here.Chinese citizens can not renounce their nationallity .When you apply for legal visa for your child you have to show birth certificate, they will say he she is Chinese so doesn;t need a visa,so you get a one off exit visa, but if you stay in China no extensions, you jave to show birth certificate again, then your child is stuck in China untill you apply for aChinese passport and follow the rules, just happened to me so i know
With my humble apologies first, my dear friend Paul, it also happened to me. On November 30, 2001, my daughter was born, her mother a Chinese national. My daughter was issued her birth certificate, but she was also register by me with the USA government, and given at my request USA passport. Maybe you can not renounce your Chinese citizenship, but if you are a citizen of another country, I do know China will not accept dual citizenship, and will not recognize you as Chinese national, not issue you a Chinese passport.
My daughter looks like a typical Chinese, does speaks, read and write Mandarin as a local, but holds a USA passport, and studies in China under a student visa since she was3 years of age. She is given a one year visa (in HKG), and at PSB gets a residence permit for one year. At end of period, we go to PSB and renew the permit, and until passport expires and we must get a new one, no worries about another visa.
So, all of the above proves is that in China, with the same rules, two different officails at different locations will resolve whatever issue different.

Happy, what I am trying to tell you,is what Chinese law states i.e legal,we all know you can get a job on f visa l visa, but is it legal no.If your child is born in China, with one parent they are Chinese, and while they are living in China they cannot renounce their nationality until they reach 21,you get the 1 off visa to leave China,if you want to legally change your childs passport.,but if you return and live as a resident it is not allowed. Why do you go to Hong Kong to renew your daughters passport.I;m really not after an argument, the advice you give on here is great,,but next time less of the humble, were both adults sarcasm is not always well

Have you been able to take your daughter back to the US? Did it cause any problems? i am seriously thinking of waiting until I get to the US before having a family because I have heard horror stories on this very site about how difficult it is to be able to get one's Chinese born child out of the country.
If I have a child born in China with my Chinese wife, I can get the child a passport by going to the embassy within a month of birth, with the birth certificate.
Happy, have you ever had any trouble taking your children to the US? I have read from a few posters here that it has been quite an odyssey getting their kids out.
I am seriously thinking of waiting until we get to the US before having children as this is something that worries me quite a bit.
At the US embassy when I checked this matter out, they said bring your child and register them and they will get US citizenship. You say they can't renounce? So that means they will have dual citizenship until the age of 21? cool.
