A friend went on a long rant about how difficult it is to get a visa if you work for an NGO. But surely there are people in other professions that have an even more difficult time such as journalists, freelance workers, artists etc.

It is difficult for anyone to get a work visa in China... even teachers in Guangzhou at an established large school, correct paperwork and ten years of experience here are being told they must now fly home to get a police check and apply at their local Chinese consulate.
SwedKiwi1:
That depends on when you make your application, I believe. It is still possible to renew a working visa in Guangzhou without having to leave China.
Journalist should be pretty difficult. ... and so far no one with the title "Quality Inspector" has been allowed in.
Traveler:
Back in 2009, I wrote "journalist "on my application for an L visa at the Chinese consulate in Australia. I had to write the following separate letter (it was something similar) before they would issue the visa: " I promise not to write anything negative about China or the CCP."
That was it. Then they issued the visa. There is stupidity, then there is the CCP...
I believe almost anything that a citizen can do is difficult for a foreigner to receive a working visa
Health and Safety, Environmental Health, and Food Hygiene Safety Inspectors, must surely be a no no.. FBI, Female Body Inspector.
It is surprisingly easy as a language teacher compared to most other professions. I would say that anyone related to governments or journalism would encounter the most difficulties.
I would imagine "Political Analyst".
Incidentally, the current job title I have on all my documentation is "Product Safety Specialist". My background is Food Quality and Safety Management. I am self employed but have no real problem renewing my RP every year. Mysteriously (or otherwise) the only thing that the Chinese government will not seem to entertain is that my background should be classified as special need expertise when evaluating criteria for the new visa type.
I do not know. Maybe join the CCP and they will grand a working visa for you. Government officials in this country have special treatments.
