Q: Getting a dog in Guangzhou

Hello All,

How would one go about getting a puppy in guangzhou?

I've heard about the animal markets, Yuehu and the like but I've also heard they are rife with disease and not the best place to get a pet.

Is there a dog shelter with rescue dogs here?

There's usually a dog shelter in every town, except here they're known as soup kitchens.

Our vet usually has a couple of dogs that are not wanted by anyone. They basically are office pets, well taken care of and will be able to be adopted if anyone asks.

Whatever you do, make sure you go to a vet as the first thing. If you buy from a pet shop, say you want some kind of money back guarantee if the dog doesn't make it e.g. a week. We have a friend who went to pick up a puppy in GZ, it died about 5 days after, and in the mean time she had clocked up thousands in vet bills, stayed home from work to care for the puppy to no avail. Sure it is just a dog, but it is still a very very bad experience.

Also, are you Chinese ? If not, think it through, can you bring a dog back home, probably you can,but look into it. I sure wouldn't give up my little boy just because we relocate. (stupid dog destroying my career as we cannot move to Singapore)

shemma:

No, I'm Irish, I'm going to be here for the next couple of years at least and after than I've looked into the quarantine rules for bringing a pet home and its do-able.  :)

Where's your vet based?

Zhuhai, so not too relevant for you

(remember you cannot bring dogs on trains and busses in China)

Best place to find a dog without disease in GZ  is a restaurant.  If you want a good healthy dog, go to an earthquake prone area, Sichuan, Yunan, Tangshan.  Not only good companions but serve a purpose.

Nice idea to get a dog but as you're probably only here a couple of years (as you're teaching in Phoenix) I hope you've looked at the coat, as well as the quarantine/vaccination rules, for shipping a dog back to Ireland. It's bloody expensive!

Good luck

Scandinavian:

it's not too expensive. For a China to Europe flight, it is about 500-1000 depending on airline/actual destination. Prior to that, some shots and tests, may run up in a couple of thousands. But doing the paperwork yourself, it is not too expensive.

Our dog has an EU passport, so to go back to EU, all that is required is a export permit from a certified Chinese vet. + some hundreds to the airline. Our dog flew here with Lufthansa.

Cheers for the feedback. I was basing my comments on an American friend who had a dog here. He told me to ship a dog to the US was in the '000's of dollars.

I hope you don't live in Tianhe/Yuexiu/Liwan/and probably other districts I never go to, because these are some nightmarish places for pets (the pollution, the dirt, the constant noise, the lack of greenery, ...), your dog will very likely turn insane.

If you get a pedigree dog, some have heredity problems that Chinese probably don't screen for, Collies may have eye problems, Golden Retreivers may have hip problems, etc. Do some homework.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
