Q: Is getting rid of clean western style restrooms a new trend?

So I spent a week goofing off in Jinan and noticed the Starbucks was remodeled at 5 different shopping malls and everyone of them to add space took out the clean restrooms with paper towels, sit down toilet and now you have to use the dirty mall restrooms with no soap, paper, etc.

Since Kfc sold out, no paper frequently, Macdonalds in the malls are also closing the restrooms and sending customers to the mall restrooms.

Is this happening in other cities as well or just Jinan. I actually go to some malls for dinner and shopping because there is a clean restroom and now will ignore them and stay home and spend no money.

" I will ignore them and stay home and spend no money."

Acute observation and significant question. This is the part that counts. Customers with choices start leaving. This creates a downward spiral with customer quality dwindling. The whole thing spirals downward until the mall is left with nothing but cochroaches. End game --- back to square one. I have a suspicion that this is what is happening with PRC (i.e. pollution, same mentality/story).  End game for PRC soon. "Karma 101", very scientifc, perfectly logical. Thanks very much for sharing this.

P.S. Capitals are fleeing PRC at phenomenal rate, btw.

I think it depends on how it is done Ambi. A place I go to in GZ (not a mall, more a piazza), has rest rooms that are used by all the businesses. The shop units don't have them. That model works for this place. Probably because it is aimed at "rich" people.

CoCo park in Shenzhen is the same. No toilets in the individual units. It's a long march to take a piss.

I suspect it makes the plumbing easier.

It's a sort of micro model of global Reagonomics.... you know... outsource the shit to a place far away that is cheap surprise.

Socialists of course would provide lots of toilets. At the cost of higher tax rates of course.

But you are a Republican of course, so you won't pay social taxes.

My answer is, buy your own toilet on wheels and tow it behind you. Or employ people to tow it.  Yup. privitise toilets .

Only joking Ambi. Sorry, I could not resist wink

ambivalentmace:

actually new york city did put in private toilets that you pay with credit card to make the city some money, progress in a progressive city were 47000 rich millionaires pay for 70 percent of the city's budget for 7 million people, what could be more fair.

Where do the poor people shit?

I have been to NY often... never had to pay to shit.

Indeed. I remember landing at Heathrow in 1999. Got the tube to Liverpool street station. I only had $ on me. went for a piss... the toilet wanted a 1 pound coin. I decided to leave the UK because of that. Why should I pay to have a piss.

New business plan, let's find a rich socialists country that has not bled the citizens dry yet and get funding for a new airline with robot servers and port o potties and call it "Potty Airline". what could possibly go wrong. put a qr code reader at the entrance, in the overhead bins, the toilet door, on the robots wrist, of course use AI for the pilot and run the plane on solar power.

I noticed that too. More and more Starbucks without a restroom and send you to the mall's squatters instead.

Sucks because the clean restroom was pretty much the only reason I would pay that much for a coffee when I have time to waste waiting for someone/thing.

But Chinese don't care about clean restroom, they want to show off that they can afford to go to Starbucks, there is no need for anything but the logo on the cup.

Reason is Chinese do everything they can to trash the restrooms, many go to Strabucks just to use their restrooms even though the mall has restrooms nearby even right across from the Strarbucks.

Now you guess what their motives are?

earthizen:

This is typical da lu ren's penny pinching mentality, cut cost and use space for more business, at the expense of customer service. Akin to using sub-standard construction material, life / human rights are worthless. Only money counts. The fact they used to have it (original western style management) indicates the locals are taking over.

The non-customers use StarBuck's toilets because they are better decorated and cleaner, their design/space probably subject to franchise agreement. What they should do is get some chips with their logo and give it to customers (show receipt) who need to use the toilet, give it to the janitor who would let them in. Inconvenient? Call it FACE, haha. "I use Starbuck's toilet" (brings glory to all their ancestors, all the way back to cavemen's era!!!) angry

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
