Q: Good excuses for getting out of KTV...

My work is throwing a 'christmas' party and I have to go to KTV... I don't mind it normally, but not too big a fan of my colleagues' singing... any good ideas for excuses?

Please and Thank you

say that it is at the time of your arranged call to your family at home.

maybe it is your 'mother's Birthday' ???

in the evening, i would cite family obligations to get out of things.

works every time wink

KTV will probably be after the party, so you can probably say you're tired or you have to get up early the next day.

"My probation terms forbid me from partaking of activities involving alcohol and loud music. Although the death toll was rather limited on those other three occasions, and I was pardoned due to mental instability, I'm afraid that I can not be counted upon to act with such restraint this time."

Say you want to use the time to visit your boyfriend/mistress while your husband/wife thinks you are singing " I did it my way".

Interesting thought actually.  If a man has a mistress, what does a married woman have if she has some guy set up in an apartment for sporting activities?

Is there a word for him?  In English or Chinese?

Seems a bit sexist to me if not.

Sokie:

奸夫淫妇,    first two words for the man, last two words for the woman.

As to think of a name for the " him" ,

here are the choices:

Bejamin  (you know Mrs. Robinson

Toy boy or boy toy?

Dead man?  if he gets caught then he is called a dead man

I'd say it depends on whether there's a party and then a KTV or if the party IS the KTV. If the first, just go to the party, be political and explain that you're tired/sick and need to get some rest so no KTV. If the KTV is the only event I'd say you should just suck it up and go for a bit in order to show you're a team player and what not. Doubtful anyone will notice or care if you leave early but should make an appearance. Employers would generally frown on completely blowing off staff events.

I'd probably go along just for the hell of it. You'd never know what might happen. It could actually be fun. Or... if you really don't want to go, how about acting like an adult and calming saying "no"?

sorrel:

A surprising number of Chinese people don't take 'no' for an answer.

A short cut to saying 'no' for up to 5 minutes as they try to 'persuade' (pressure) you, can be to give an excuse that they can't argue with.

Do what a lot of the locals do.  Get blotto on baijiu and then start yelling and screaming before throwing up all over yourself and everyone else.  That'll get you out of there quick smart.

Next day you'll be the hero.

Just go and get drunk. It sucks but don't be the party pooper. When in Rome, get drunk to the point you don't care where you are.

Ok speaking from a lot of experience, there is no easy way to get out of going to a company ktv party.  Funny the most useless excuses you can't really use got the most up-votes.

The sad truth is, you have to go.  It sucks but you have got to at least show your face so here's what you do;  you show up 1 or more hours late so if the party begins at 8 you arrive at 9 or even 9:30 this way they're already swimming in booze and bai jiu shots.  Now, it is your mission to endure this for approximately 60 to 90 minutes, at that point you conveniently need to leave the room to take a phone call (which is normal in ktv) and you just never go back in -- this is your exit.  Because you arrived late and by the time you leave they should already be at the wasted point (people going to the washroom to throw up and/or glasses/bottles are getting broken because of drunk clumsiness) so the next day nobody will be the wiser about your great escape -- they'll just remember you were there.

Another strategy is after your 60-90 minutes of hell there might be some other staff member who needs to bail for whatever reason, you can piggyback on their bailing and go along with them.

Sinobear:

Really? I post humorous answers because I have the nads to just say "no". Perhaps you don't.

I say "no" and that's it - that's all. The sad truth is people feel compelled to do what they're told, when they're told and how they're told to do it. Losing a valuable foreign employee is more of a loss of face to a school or company, so knowing your value becomes a bargaining chip.

But you go ahead and play your games believing that it works. I save my time and energy by just saying "no." One does not have to do anything here (save following the ever-changing visa rules). The weaker one's skills and abilities are, the more one has to put up with.

@Sinobear: Oh surprise surprise look who took the bait.

Yes, always say no to everything and see how far you get in life, at least by saying no it means you're in control, right?  You make it sound like companies here are throwing KTV parties every other week which is totally not the case, it's a 2-4 times a year thing in most companies which although I can't look forward to them I should go because I'm a manager and most if not all my staff will be there and it doesn't look good if I'm not at least present for some of it.  If you are not a manager you probably don't understand, my bad.

It depends on everyone's individual situation; if you're a teacher and your school is throwing a KTV party you should probably wave your contract in your school's face saying there are no contractual obligations that you're required to go and that if they want you to go it needs to be on company/class time otherwise you'll be expected to be paid for your participation at an hourly rate and transportation to and from the venue will be provided at the school's expense and/or reimbursed taxi fares the following day.  If your school absolutely insists with you to be there, ask them where the nearest SAFEA office is.  ha.  This is the general attitude of FT's here, I get it now.

Sinobear:

@Iron_Monkey: Haha! You took the bait!

Yes, living on your knees must be better than dying on your feet. KTV has several elements that some foreigners find distasteful: smoking, alcohol, hookers and bad singing.

When I was a manager/director, I took into account different peoples' likes/dislikes and arranged venues to cater to the majority. People were free to attend/not attend as they wished.

Unless you are an indentured servant, what you do/do not do on your own free time is up to you. Free will, self-confidence, self-esteem, self-respect and all that.

As for your contract-waving segue, a brown-noser, boot-licker, ass-kisser what have you is just as bad.

If I want to attend a function, I attend. If I don't, I simply say, "no thanks."
