I've got a few days off for the upcoming festival and wouldn't mind checking out the festivities for once. In Beijing, the best excuse for rivers are highly acidic canals that would probably cause anything wooden to quickly dissolve. Actually that could be pretty fun, see how far they can paddle before their boat sinks into the fiery polluted abyss. Anyway I digress - any cities that are especially known for their epic dragon boat races?
I've watched them at Houhai before. I've heard there is one at Summer Palace too, though I haven't gone. It's an interesting event, if you're into symbolic boat races...
Actually, the Dragon Boat Festival is a relatively new public holiday (2008), so local governments are pushing to encourage people to celebrate it. I'm just happy to have the extra day off.

Wow, now that must of been one hell of a reception party! (pun intended).
Yeah, cities with rivers... Sorry I couldn't resist.

Yep, 15 min from where I live, in Jimei. Some of my students will take part in it.
I prefer to watch those races in the comfort of my own living room. It's either that or I will live stream them on my internet!
I saw them in GZ and it was a shitty time. It was freaking hot, there is no shade, so everyone is holding up an umbrella blocking everyone's view. Only the people who made it there really early can see any of the races or festivities, if you get there late you won't see anything except a sea of umbrellas, and a good chance of passing out from the heat and humidity.
